Man Vandalizes Indiana Planned Parenthood With An Ax

  • A 27-year-old man vandalized the Planned Parenthood clinic in Bloomington, Indiana, with an ax and splashed the clinic with red paint this morning. According to police, he targeted Planned Parenthood “due to abortions being performed there. He stated his intent was to damage the building because they ‘kill’ and ‘murder’ babies. He attributed his actions to his religious beliefs.” Clinic violence is domestic terrorism and it is scary. [IndyStar]

Indiana Advances Bill Requiring 2 Transvaginal Ultrasounds Before & After Abortion, Then Changes It

  • Indiana’s state Senate advanced a bill requiring a woman to get two transvaginal ultrasounds before taking the RU-486 abortion pill, one before and one afterwards. Fortunately, today they dropped that language, saying doctors should perform “appropriate testing” on women two weeks after the abortion pill is taken. Which could mean urine testing … or a transvaginal ultrasound. [Slate, San Francisco Gate]

Today’s Lady News: Indiana Cuts Funding To Planned Parenthood

  • Millions in funding for Planned Parenthood clinics in Indiana has been cut off after Governor Mitch Daniels signed a bill yesterday, affecting services like STD testing, birth control, and cancer screenings via Pap smears. Indiana has become the first state in the U.S. to cut funding from PP clinics — the new pet project of anti-abortion activists. A federal judge refused PP’s request to block the law from going into effect earlier today. [The Root, Yahoo News]
  • Last month, the chief of Navy chaplains instructed that same sex marriages could be performed on Naval bases if the marriages would be legal within the state the base resides. Yesterday. the Navy reversed its decision on same sex marriages on Navy bases, reportedly due to an outcry from Republican lawmakers. [Advocate]

Today’s Lady News: Indiana Votes To Defund Planned Parenthood

  • Indiana’s state legislature voted yesterday to defund Planned Parenthood from roughly $3 million in family planning money. The state receives the funding from Title X, which allocates federal funds to family planning clinics, and uses it in eight of Indiana’s 28 Planned Parenthoods in the state. Conservatives are upset that Planned Parenthood clinics get federal money and provide abortions, even though they are barred by Title X from spending the federal money on abortions. Governor Mitch Daniels now has one week to either veto the legislation or sign it into law. I hope he thinks of the low-income women who would be most impacted by this legislation and does the right thing. [Politico]
  • The Washington Redskins’ Albert Haynesworth was offered a plea deal in a sexual abuse case where he allegedly slid his credit card into the bra of a waitress at the W Hotel in Washington and then touched her boob. When security confronted him, he reportedly said, “I didn’t touch her … [I don't] even like black girls.” When Haynesworth was interviewed by police, according to court documents, he said, “I know what this is about, she is just upset I have a white girlfriend. I couldn’t tell you the last time I dated a black girl. She was trying to get with me.” Haynesworth’s lawyer said the football player will continue fighting the charge. Oh, Lordy, Lordy, Lordy.   • Women now earn more advanced degrees than men do, according to new U.S. Census data released on Tuesday. We’ve been earning more college degrees than men since the ’80s — woot woot! Today’s Lady News: Indiana Removes Breast Cancer BS From Abortion Bill

  • Thank God, an Indiana state Senate committee has removed a provision from an anti-abortion bill that required women seeking abortions be told that terminating a pregnancy increased their risk for breast cancer. A link between abortion and breast cancer is completely medically unproven but continues to be spouted by anti-abortion extremists as fact. [IndyStar.com]
  • A Northern Kentucky University professor has revived the conspiracy theory that Sarah Palin is actually the grandmother of her son, Trig, and essentially bamboozled the American people with the biggest hoax of all time. As much as I love conspiracy theories … who really cares about this one anymore? [Gawker]
  • A woman wearing a blue burka sitting on a trash heap is a controversial new ad campaign by Germany’s International Human Rights campaign. While their point may have been that women in some parts of the world are valued as little as trash, a depiction of a veiled woman as being like garbage is not right, either. [Feministing]
