Jared Leto Thanks “My Future Ex-Wife Lupita” And Many, Many Others In His Indie Spirit Awards Acceptance Speech

Jared Leto Thanks "My Future Ex-Wife Lupita" And Many, Many Others In His Indie Spirit Awards Acceptance Speech
"My future ex-wife, Lupita, I’m thinking about you."

Knock on wood, but Jared Leto and his beautiful ombre man bun will probably be taking home an Academy Award tonight for playing a trans woman in “Dallas Buyers Club,” but he probably won’t get as much time on stage to say thank you as he did at last night’s Film Independent Spirit Awards. I loved his full acceptance speech — which included a funny but still swoon-worthy shoutout to maybe-paramour Lupita Nyong’o — so much that I wanted to post the full transcript, which you can find after the jump. Watch the edited version, which aired on television, above. Good luck tonight, Jared! We’re rooting for you.  Keep reading »

Style Superlatives: The 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards

The big night is tonight — the Academy Awards! — but for the independent film industry, last night’s Indie Spirit Awards are an even more meaningful occasion, as they gather to celebrate the films that made it to the screen despite very little funds or backing. Interestingly, all of last night’s big winners are frontrunners in their categories at tonight’s Academy Awards, with Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey (“Dallas Buyers Club”), Cate Blanchett (“Blue Jasmine”), and Lupita Nyong’o and “12 Years A Slave” very likely to take home gold men. But fashion-wise, things couldn’t be more different. Saving the gowns for later, the women at last night’s Indie Spirit Awards went a little crazy with color, hem-length, and prints, while some did away with dresses altogether. Click through to see who had the most effortless hippie vibe, who is dressing like a newly single lady, and which actress is rumored to have worn her pit hair with pride…

Tonight is the Academy Awards,  which means Hollywood got the party started last night at the Independent Spirit Awards, where movies without big budget backing are celebrated for their achievements. Makeup Bag: Rose Gold Is No Longer Just For Jewelry

Is it just me, or was the beauty for this year’s Oscars kind of a bore? The ladies looked lovely as always, but for the life of me I couldn’t pick out a makeup look that really wowed. Maybe it’s because some of the real stunners, the young actresses who can afford to dare to stand out from the pack, skipped the ceremony entirely and made their way over to the Vanity Fair party a few hours early instead. Basically every time Elizabeth Olsen, who’s quickly becoming my favorite Olsen, leaves the house and is photographed, I subsequently covet to death whatever makeup she’s wearing — she always looks fresh-faced and pretty, never overdone. Predictably the Vanity Fair fête was no exception, but it was her appearance the night before at the Independent Spirit Awards that really stuck with me: the rose gold eyeshadow she sported is well on its way to becoming a major trend. The girls in Glamour‘s beauty department were one step ahead of me in identifying the frequency with which the gorgeously gilded shade has been worn. Let me tell you, I’ll take anything rose gold without question, but I’m really in love with it when swiped on lids. Here are the products you can use to get this celeb-approved look.

Seth Rogen, host of last night’s Independent Spirit Awards, pretty much killed it in his opening monologue, taking well-deserved shots at Mel Gibson (“Drive made Jews so scary I thought Mel Gibson directed it”) and Lars Von Trier. But his best joke killed three birds with one stone — Brett Ratner, who was forced to resign from producing the Oscars after he used a homophobic slur, Chris Brown, and the Grammy Awards. Referring to Ratner’s swift ouster, Rogen joked that he was better suited to produce the Grammys anyway, because “at the Grammys, you can literally beat the shit out of a nominee and be asked to perform twice.” Oof. The Good, The Bad & The Meh At The 2012 Independent Spirit Awards

How do the stars — well, some of them — spend the night before the Oscars? Celebrating the best of independent cinema, that’s how. The Indie Spirit Awards’ purple carpet is decidedly more casual than the Academy Awards, but stars like Michelle Williams, Rashida Jones, and Elizabeth Olsen still don’t slack off in the style department. Unfortunately, some others do. Check out the good, the bad, and the meh sartorial choices at last night’s fête.
