I like to go shopping more than I care to admit. My boyfriend will come home to find me in the midst of new bags, trying on my latest purchases, and he’ll utter the same question every time: “Didn’t you just go shopping?” But without fail, I’ll find a new ring, a new dress, or new shoes that I just need to integrate into my wardrobe. And I figure, as a 20-something girl living in NYC, with no bills besides my rent and cable, what’s wrong with treating myself to a little shopping? I do work in fashion after all. My disposable income is just that — disposable in the form of purses, accessories, and skirts. So it was more than surprising to me that Dr. Mark J. Perry, an economist at the University of Michigan, found that Americans only spend 3 percent of their disposable income on shopping. In one year, as a whole, we spent $326 billion on clothing and footwear, which is a minimal 2.98 percent of our income, but in 1950, those purchasing habits equated to 11 percent of that same income. What does this mean exactly? Basically, clothes are cheaper than they’ve been in years. You can thank stores like Forever 21 and H&M with their immediate wear-a-few-times-and-trash mentality for this development. And with this news, I’ll continue shopping, thank you very much. Over the past 37 years, the woman’s role in a family has changed enormously. According to a Pew Research Center report released today, more men in 2007 than 1970 are married to women who are more educated and make more money than they do themselves. A lot of things are at play here, creating this trend of smarty-pants female breadwinners, one of which is that in the 30 to 34 age group, more U.S.-born women than men have college degrees. Along with more of us going to college, we’re also making more money than we were 40 years ago. In 2007, median earnings of full-time female workers were 71 percent of what comparable men made, compared with 52 percent in 1970.
And while the economic downturn has been a total bummer for all of us, it actually hasn’t been as terrible for women. Because more “male” industries have been affected, women have actually seen gains: In December 2009, we constituted 47.4 percent of the employed. A new study reveals that when it comes to a woman’s pleasure during sex, size does indeed matter, but not in the way you may think. Apparently, men with large incomes give women more orgasms than men with smaller ones. The Chinese Health and Family Life Survey interviewed 5,000 Chinese people about their personal lives, including questions about their sex lives, income and other factors. Of the 1,534 women surveyed with male partners, 121 reported always having orgasms during sex, while 408 more had them “often”. Another 762 “sometimes” came while 243 had them rarely or never. These figures are similar to those for western countries. While there were several factors responsible for these variances, money was attributed as the main factor. Study author, Dr Thomas Pollet, said: “Increasing partner income had a highly positive effect on women’s self-reported frequency of orgasm. More desirable mates cause women to experience more orgasms.” Dr. Pollet believes this phenomenon “is an ‘evolutionary adaptation’ that is hard-wired into women, driving them to select men on the basis of their perceived quality.” So basically, he thinks women are biologically predisposed to be gold-diggers. Surely there are other reasons women may have orgasms more frequently with wealthy men. Perhaps men with larger incomes are more sexually confident; Maybe they have less anxiety about their flaws and, um, shortcomings, making them better lovers; Or, maybe, just maybe, this study is totally bogus.
