My Doppleganger Julie Gerstenblatt Must Be Stopped

Get Twins-ing!
Julie and I have started a meme. Read More »

According to folklore, everybody’s got a doppleganger running around somewhere in the world. A doppleganger, depending on how you choose to interpret it, is either your exact twin, or your exact opposite — your alter ego. Oh, let’s just go to the Wikipedia definition:

In fiction and folklore, a doppelgänger is a paranormal double of a living person, typically representing evil or misfortune. In modern vernacular, the word has come to refer to any double or look-alike of a person.

The word also is used to describe the sensation of having glimpsed oneself in peripheral vision, in a position where there is no chance that it could have been a reflection. Doppelgängers often are perceived as a sinister form of bilocation and are regarded by some to be harbingers of bad luck. In some traditions, a doppelgänger seen by a person’s friends or relatives portends illness or danger, while seeing one’s own doppelgänger is an omen of death.

The you that is not you but yet exactly you. Also, death? GREAT. And in Huffington Post comedy writer Julie Gerstenblatt I believe I’ve found that person. Keep reading »

HuffPo’s New Divorce Section — Smart Idea Or Too Cynical?

This week, the Huffington Post launched a groundbreaking new category of content for a news blog or lifestyle magazine: a section devoted to divorce. Chock-full of advice, how-tos (for navigating the holidays, finding a lawyer, breaking it to the kids, etc.), celeb divorce news, and insightful personal essays, there is no dearth of content on the section’s home page. Editor-at-large Nora Ephron and Arianna Huffington cooked up the idea last summer while hanging out in the Hamptons and have been working to bring it to life ever since … Keep reading »

John Mayer Slams Huffington Post For Shoddy Reporting

HuffPo, John Mayer is putting you on blast! The prolific Twitter junkie and master of the guitar solo O-face has taken to his blog to slam the blog Huffington Post for printing a story that he calls “equal parts fabricated, cobbled together and misleading.” The story in question: “John Mayer & Jennifer Aniston BACK TOGETHER?” The HuffPo article contends that Mayer and Aniston might be back together based on some comments Mayer made at a recent concert. The problem, Mayer writes, is that Huffington Post took bits and pieces of various things he said over the course of an entire show and made it appear as if it was one statement. Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Huffington Post Taken To Task For Sexist Content

  • I love this Bitch magazine video, “The Huffington Post’s Sexist Link Bait Strategy,” by Anita Sarkeesian — and not just because my study for Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting about the lack of female bloggers on HuffPost’s front page is quoted in it. She asks why the site calls itself liberal and progressive when so much of its internet traffic comes from viewers looking at slideshows of celebrity nip slips. [Bitch]
  • Walmart is appealing an April ruling to authorize a class action lawsuit against the company for sex discrimination. Female employees past and present claim they received lower pay and were passed over for promotions. [Reuters]
  • Yesterday, Alaskan voters approved a law that requires a parent to be notified by a doctor if a teen girl, age 17 or younger, is seeking an abortion. The teen girl can skirt the law if she provides the doctor a notarized statement that she is being abused at home. Already 34 other states require that a parent be notified or give consent in order for an abortion to be performed. [Anchorage Daily News]

Huffington Post Delivers Celebs’ Pores And Pimples Up Close

The Huffington Post recently introduced a new entertainment feature called The Big Picture, starring “unedited celebrity photos, blown up,” ostensibly so visitors can inspect the size of Lindsay Lohan, Elizabeth Hurley and Sting’s pores and comment on who could use a facial or plastic surgery. (Disclosure: I used to work at HuffPo.) “[The Big Picture is] a playful spin on our culture’s ongoing fascination with celebrity images,” a spokesperson told Portfolio.com. “Two days in, reader reaction has been largely positive.” Something tells me that reaction refers to a positive increase in website traffic for HuffPo, not positive commentary on body image. That’s a value Arianna Huffington appears to have hypocritically lauded in the very first chapter (“Fearless About The Body”) in her self-help book, On Becoming Fearless. Yes, airbrushing celebs and models is out of control, but zeroing in on “flaws” is no way to ease up on body-hating in our culture. But sadly, this isn’t new for HuffPo. [Portfolio] Keep reading »

Maureen Dowd’s Columns, Explained

How does the op-ed community’s snarkiest scribbler pack so much fiber and fluff into her New York Times column twice a week?

She consults her “How Maureen Dowd Writes A Column” flow chart, duh. Image after the jump. [Huffington Post] Keep reading »

The Case Of Huffington Post Sexism

There’s been some internet chatter recently about how Huffington Post, a blog with mostly liberal writers and a liberal slant on the news, publishes a lot of photos and slideshows of half-naked female celebs. Two years ago I was on staff at the Huffington Post and this was going on back then too. The ongoing hypocrisy of an ostensibly liberal politics site objectifying women’s bodies, sadly, is not new.

Quickies!: Jamie Lynn Spears Is Just Like Any Other Teen

  • Jamie Lynn Spears gives us the finger, and parties it up. [TMZ] — We’re glad the girl is finally acting her age, but we’re a little scared about what’s in the cup.
  • Miley Cyrus and Justin Gaston have reportedly split up. [Us Magazine] — He was too cute for her, anyway.
  • Courtney Love seems to have recovered from her mid-life crisis, and is on to bigger and better things…like starting her own fashion line. [Refinery 29] — I have to admit, I’m more scared than excited.

Who’s America’s Sexiest Comedienne?

Obviously, we are big Tina Fey, Amy Sedaris, and Aisha Tyler enthusiasts. So we immediately clicked on this Huffington Post poll about 15 of the leading ladies of funny. But—wait—it asks readers to rate the women on their looks? Even HuffPo acknowledges that it’s a “poll of ridiculous proportions.” Sure, these women are beautiful. But it’s their wit, slapstick antics, and all-around hilariousness that stole our hearts. So while we wished they asked, “Who’s the funniest comedienne?” we decided to take a look at the current rankings. What we found may surprise you. Keep reading »
