So we’ve covered both the top trends to watch this fall and the five must-haves you need to get them, but there’s one particular look that’s been safely concealed beneath the radar until now. Burgundy eyeshadow — or, well, any eyeshadow with warm reddish tones — doesn’t exactly sound like the most flattering of colors, but you’d be pleasantly surprised by how wearable the vampy shade becomes when applied sheer and smoky like a haze around the eye. Brace yourselves: it’s time to start considering fall beauty. It seems like just yesterday we were discussing our lighter, more low-maintenance summer beauty routines, but the forecast will be replete with smoky eyes and vampy lips before we know it. I look to the Autumn/Winter runway shows for a bit of insight into what we’ll be seeing on the red carpet in the coming months — and if celebrity trends are any indicator, we should all be in search of that perfect burgundy lipstick. Click through for a selection of fall looks straight off the catwalk, along with a few simple steps to wearing them yourself.
Rachel Weisz is so beautiful it’s stupid, and I think much of her allure has to do with the fact that she lacks the eerily perfect symmetry of most Hollywood faces — she has a really unique, almost strange look to her that is beyond compelling. After all, Daniel Craig put a ring on it, and though there was a significant amount of scandal surrounding that whole situation, it seems to me like the circumstances were very different from what the general public took from it (which, it must be said, definitely applies to most celebrity “scandals”). But I digress, because all I really have to say is: how gorgeous are these photos from the British actress’s September cover of Marie Claire UK? Those eyes! That hair! If I could have anyone’s face, I would probably choose Rachel Weisz, because look. Since I am ostensibly unable to do that, I’ll settle for trying to make myself look like her by piling on the bronze eyeshadow and contouring the hell out of my cheekbones. After the jump, check out my product picks for recreating Rachel’s smoky, subtle beauty — I know you don’t want to think about this, but it’s truly perfect for fall. Keep reading »
We are huge fans of DIY projects that can make us look glam in under 15 minutes. This DIY necklace design (made by me and modeled by Amelia) is awesome for three reasons: 1) It picks up on one of the hottest necklace trends, beads and chain; 2) you can recycle beads and a chain from another necklace or bracelet you have (if you want); and 3) the magnetic clasps mean you can make tons of bead combinations on new strands and swap them in!
After the jump is your list of supplies, and if you’re new to beading, a video we made for additional info. Keep reading »
I just got my polished paws on Deborah Lippmann’s Run The World (Girls) summer mini set. With this many hawt neon shades at my fingertips, I just had to take ‘em for a spin with an ombré fade. It’s a look right off the Spring 2012 runway. But the best part is, it’s an easy technique and the perfect way to dip your toes in the nail art pool. So don’t be afraid to dive in! Here’s how you can do up your digits all dayglo …
Must Haves: You’ll need a squishy makeup sponge and three awesomely different shades. I’m all about my new neons, but you can feel free to switch it up. One of my fave combos is turquoise, deep blue, and black. No matter what colors you choose, lay them down lightest to darkest.
I hated — hated! — Nicole Richie in her “Simple Life” days. I mean, didn’t you? She was bratty, annoying, and entitled with crusty hair extensions and a tiny dog, whining and generally acting despicable alongside her equally (if not more) horrible cohort, Paris Hilton. That’s why I love Nicole all the more now: she was that girl, and now she’s … kind of the antithesis of that girl. She’s a mother, a wife, a designer, a TV show co-host, and an all around cool, normal-seeming person, with great style to boot. I just love how drastic her transformation was in the most positive way possible; Nicole is a real testament to the fact that you can be whoever you want to be, provided you’re ready and willing to make the change.
It’s no secret that she’s also really, really pretty: it’s all in those gorgeous deep-set eyes. My
way too far away West Coast-dwelling coworker Winona (also gorgeous) has a really similar almond eye shape, so emulating Nicole’s makeup is a good look for her. She wanted to know how to get the star’s ubiquitous soft yet still defined eye, which she’s been wearing on Fashion Star and her other TV appearances as of late. This eye is different because, rather than harsh black, which can make eyes look smaller, it’s done in soft shades of brown with touches of shimmery gold. It’s beautiful and versatile, perfect for day, night, any time, anywhere. I’m breaking it down to the nitty gritty, after the jump! Keep reading »
