Beauty-wise, there are two really great things about winter: 1) you don’t really have to shave, and 2) the state of your toes is largely irrelevant because they’re so often encased in boots and other toe-hiding shoes. Come summer, both of these become weird and disgusting, so you have to start, you know, taking care of yourself. It’s lame, but we generally go along with it, if only to avoid that talk about the importance of “always looking your best!” from our mothers. Shaving is easy enough, but pedicures can be a pain. Ahh, yes, the age-old “how much shine is too much shine” conundrum. We know it well. A general rule of thumb when wearing sequins and sparkles is to make sure you’re confining the shine to one piece rather than spreading it all up over your outfit. Wedding season is upon us and one of the many items on a bride and groom’s long to-do/wish list may very well include having their wedding announcement published in the New York Times (or not!). This time last year, when my husband and I were planning a wedding, we figured it was a pretty long shot getting our own announcement published, but we also thought our families — and friends … and future kiddos — would get a kick out of it if we somehow made it happen. Kinda like, “Can you believe the Times actually let those dorks grace its pages?” And you know what? It did! My husband and I are not rich, don’t have particularly impressive pedigrees, didn’t graduate from Ivy League schools, and can’t call ourselves doctors, lawyers or investment bankers (at least, not with a straight face), but the New York Times still published our wedding announcement anyway. And if the Paper of Record can let a couple of average Joes like us into their esteemed wedding section, it’s certainly possible for you to land a coveted slot too. It took me three hours, but I finally tamed the mess of shoes, belts and bags that had been holding my room hostage for weeks. I live in New York, so my apartment is tiny, but definitely not small enough that accessories should make it impossible for me to actually walk around in my bedroom. I’d been practicing the flying leap from doorway to bed method. Or sometimes just sleeping with my roommate to avoid the issue entirely. Needless to say, the whole thing was getting pathetic.
