We’ve been big fans of Laura Jane Grace long before she came out as a transgender woman earlier this year, but we love the lead singer of seminal punk band Against Me! all the more now that we’ve witnessed her incredibly brave, positive attitude toward her recent transition. Needless to say, we’re a little jealous that Grace gave MTV’s House of Style hosts Joan Smalls and Karlie Kloss a comprehensive tour of her Florida home, including her enviable record collection, her wife and daughter, and yes, her closet. Laura Jane is a true inspiration, and not only to the trans community: everybody can learn a little something from her openness and her adamance that above all, the most important thing is to feel comfortable in your own skin. Not to mention that the advice she gives about maintaining good skincare habits regardless of how grimy you are otherwise is invaluable. [NYMag.com]
Who didn’t absolutely love the awkward-as-hell Cindy Crawford on the ’90s fashion show “House of Style”? Cindy was less than comfortable actually speaking on camera, but that didn’t stop the execs at MTV from capitalizing on her supermodel popularity. While the original “House of Style” is long gone, MTV has decided to reboot the show as a web-mostly series. The new host will be announced during the MTV Video Awards on September 6. Our guess is Alexa Chung, but either way, we’re stoked to see a comeback. We managed to dig up this vintage video of Todd Oldham interviewing designers Andre Walker and John Galliano, plus two more amazing clips after the jump!

Spring must have sprung. Everybody’s getting naked! Especially when it comes to the covers of magazines. Yesterday, it was Miranda Kerr stripping down and chaining herself to a tree to save the koalas on the cover of Rolling Stone. Today, it’s Bar Refaeli taking it all off for the July issue of Esquire, her body painted with the contents of the magazine. The 23-year-old Israeli model is the girlfriend of Leonardo DiCaprio and the host of MTV’s most recent reincarnation of “House of Style.” I think the cover’s pretty awesome; it reminds me of “The Pillow Book,” in which bodies get turned into books. But what about you: Have you ever posed naked? [HuffPo] Keep reading »
I tuned in at 3pm sharp this Saturday to catch the debut of the NEW “House Of Style,” quite possibly my favorite relic of MTV’s days of yore. As Annika wrote in her preview post, we were worried that this new incarnation would be totally juvenile (not always a good thing!) thanks to a partnership with Teen Vogue. And how would Bar Rafaeli, Leonardo DiCaprio girlfriend and Israeli supermodel, stack up against past hosts Cindy Crawford, Shalom Harlow, Amber Valetta, and Rebecca Romijn? SPOILER: She sucked! We knew we had pretty much outgrown MTV when the network took on its “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” format — hello, “Cribs” and “My Super Sweet 16.” But we’ll totally tune in today at 3 pm when MTV puts a new spin on “House of Style.” You remember…that really cool style show, which helped keep Todd Oldham’s career afloat and was hosted by seemingly every popular ’90s model, like Cindy Crawford and Shalom Harlow. This time around, MTV is partnering with Teen Vogue to explore street and runway fashion. Host Bar Rafaeli, Teen Vogue editors, and Chanel Iman will countdown the must-have fashions for spring. And the DIY segment is still a part of the show, but you have to tune in on time in order to catch it. We’re hoping this show doesn’t completely exclude adult fashion and that we’ll be able to reinterpret teen styles. Let us know in the comments what you think of this remake.
