Over the weekend, “Horrible Bosses” grossed $28 million at the box office. But according to an interview Brett Ratner did with The Hollywood Reporter, in the six years the movie was in development, it could have had a very, very different cast. Ratner explained that many actors had once been attached to take Charlie Day, Jason Bateman, and Jason Sudeikis’ roles—including Ashton Kutcher, Ryan Reynolds, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Johnny Knoxville, and then Ashton Kutcher again. Over the past few weeks, Jennifer Aniston has (unwittingly, I think) hogged the “Horrible Bosses” publicity spotlight. Almost all of the coverage of the movie has focused on her—how she may or may not have a topless scene in the movie, how she’s breaking out of America’s Sweetheart mode to play a sex-crazed dentist, how she blew a kiss to Justin Theroux while getting her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Jennifer Aniston may play one of titular crappy bosses in the movie “Horrible Bosses.” But until she made it big on “Friends,” she could have been more accurately described as a “horrible employee.” In the press scramble for the movie, several reporters have asked her about her worst jobs and she’s given a few different answers. “I waited a lot of tables, and I wasn’t very good at that,” she told Marie Claire. “I dropped more than one Alpine burger in customers’ laps, and you just do not want all of that Swiss cheese and mushrooms in your pants.” She also wasn’t so hot at bike messengering—a profession I associate much more with tattooed guys than with America’s Sweetheart. “The toughest job I had was being a bike messenger in New York City,” Jennifer shared with Canwest News Service. “I was 19. [My lowest moment was] probably driving into a door that opened. I’m very uncoordinated and extraordinarily klutzy.” [Showbiz Spy, USA Today]

I don’t know about you, but I sure am feeling refreshed after having July 4th off. Still, even though it’s a short week, so much is happening in the pop culture universe. Some of the most exciting happenings of this week: the series finale of “Friday Night Lights,” which makes me sad because I honestly could have watched this show for another five years; the release of “Horrible Bosses,” which, in addition to “Bridesmaids,” could make this one of the funniest summers on record; and the sequel to Push landing on bookstore shelves, which lets us know what happens to Precious about 10 years later.

Behold, the new poster for “Horrible Bosses,” the movie where Jason Sudeikis, Jason Bateman and Charlie Day conspire to kill their toxic superiors. Jennifer Aniston plays Charlie’s boss, a sadistic dentist. Now, I know many people will object to the use of the words “sex crazed” and “maneater” here alongside the image of the cowering guy and might say that this is about dudes being terrified of female sexuality. That’s probably true, but I kind of like that they cast this role with a woman. I mean, a male dentist who sexually harasses his female hygenist is probably the more likely scenario in the real world—but I like something about the role reversal — and the fact that Jennifer went for this rather than more boring romantic comedy fare. Also, can we talk about how amazing she looks as a brunette?

Jennifer Aniston usually plays good girls. But in her new movie “Horrible Bosses,” she’s coming over to the dark side—both in her actions and her hair color. In the flick, Jennifer plays a sadistic dentist who tortures her hygienist. In this trailer, she shoots him in the crotch with water and comments on his package size. She also undresses and molests patients while they’re knocked out on happy gas and keeps an iPad slideshow of the photos. Oh, and she fellates a banana. But the director assures us things go even farther in the actual movie. “There’s a whole bunch of things she does that couldn’t be put in this trailer. Stuff you won’t believe,” he says. “It’s really exciting to see [Jennifer] do something a bit further… afield, if you will.” I’m pretty excited for this one. [EW] Keep reading »
