Family Stones Pakistani Woman To Death In So-Called “Honor Killing” For Marrying Man She Loved [UPDATE]

pakistan

[UPDATE, 5/28:] The New York Times reports that Farazana Parveen was three months pregnant when she was killed. [New York Times]

A 25-year-old woman was murdered by nearly 20 family members in Pakistan today because she “dishonored” the family by marrying the man she loved.

Faranza Bibi was stoned to death in a so-called “honor killing” in broad daylight while waiting outside of a Lahore court with her husband. Faranza had intended to challenge a kidnapping charge filed by her family. She intended to tell the court she willingly married the man of her own choosing, Muhammad Iqbal, and did not want an arranged marriage to her cousin. Before the court opened, her father, brothers and former fiance descended upon her with bricks and sticks. Faranza was pronounced dead at a hospital from severe head injuries. Iqbal managed to escape the attack. Keep reading »

Frisky By The Numbers: Scary Number Of Teens In Jordan Support “Honor Killings”

one third of jordanian teens support honor killings

Here’s a horrifying statistic that should make us all stop and think: a study of teenagers in Amman, Jordan found that half of the boys and one-fifth of the girls believe that “honor killings” are OK. A so-called “honor killing” is when a family member murders a woman or girl who has brought shame upon the family; infractions can be as wide-ranging as talking to a man who is not family, having premarital sex, or being the victim of a rape. The study of 850 teens  found that not only are patriarchal attitudes still popular but violence against women expressly condoned. This is unnerving stuff. [CNN]

Today’s Lady News: Afghan Teen Flees “Honor Killing”

  • If you read one news article today, read this one: NPR has a powerful story about a teenage girl in rural Afghanistan who ran away from her family after she feared a so-called “honor killing” by her brothers because she talked to a boy on her cellphone. The girl ended up staying on a military base until she could be placed in an Afghan women’s shelter, where she eventually was matched up with a husband. It’s a bizarre happily-ever-after story, but one I found extremely touching. [NPR]

10 Suggestions For Renaming The Hymen

In some cultures, the word “hymen” could use a little re-branding — so the Swedish Association for Sexual Education is renaming it! The Nordic org is publishing literature in English, Arabic and Sorani Kurdish that refers to that little piece of tissue as the “vaginal crown” or “vaginal corona” and provides diagrams and info explaining that not having a hymen when one first has sex doesn’t mean one is not a virgin. The group hopes that more education on the hymen — er, the “vaginal crown” — will have an effect on the number of so-called “honor killings,” when male members of a family murder a woman who has had sex out of wedlock or even associated with a man who is not socially approved by her culture.

The Frisky is pretty happy to live in a place where having a hymen on our wedding night is not a life or death situation. But we couldn’t help but get the ol’ wheels turning when it comes to renaming the hymen. After the jump, some suggestions that were probably rejected … Keep reading »
