The Japanese girl group AKB48 is under fire for filming a series of suggestive candy ads that some claim promote homosexuality. The group’s ads for a sugary gummy candy feature the members of the group clad in school girl uniforms passing a piece of the candy between one another using only their mouths. Watchdog groups claim this ad promotes the gay lifestyle and is overly suggestive, despite the fact that none of the girls actually touch lips in the thirty-second spot.

The candy makers are standing behind the ad, and say that it’s one of the most popular commercials they’ve ever run (surprise, surprise). AKB48 is hugely successful in Japan and across Asia; last year they made more than $200 million in sales. The band features more than 60 (!) members and has its own dedicated performance space in Tokyo. [Yahoo]

In my favorite scene from the movie “Bruno,” Bruno (a gay fashion reporter and wannabe superstar from Austria) sat down with a Christian “gay converter” to learn how he could turn himself heterosexual. He was advised to go hunting with three straight Southern dudes, who ended up chasing him down with a gun after he showed up naked, pack of condoms in hand, to one of their tents because a “bear had eaten everything.” He then attended a swingers party to familiarize himself with hetero sex. While there, he happily demonstrated several sex positions with another man but dived out of a window trying to escape a kinky woman. When he realized that his treatment wasn’t working, he sought another “ex-gay” counselor who basically told him he may never actually like women because they are “too weak and nag too much,” but he should at least “give women a chance.” Bruno tried desperately, but after many failed attempts, he just accepted that he liked dudes and there was nothing he could do about it.

Today in Call Me A Waaaah-mbulance News: Texas theater professor Linda Ozmun is suing her employer for citing her in an annual review for refusing to attend a gay-themed show performed by students back in 2010. Ozmun claims she refused to attend for religious reasons, but Lamar University wrote on her annual review in 2011 that not going to the students’ performance was “unacceptable.” Lamar also brought a performer to campus to perform a show and workshop dealing with subjects around homosexuality and Ozmun asked to be recused from attending; the school threatened her with disciplinary action if she did not go. When I received a Facebook request from a statuesque woman named “Carol Lee,” I knew the face but not the name. Mentally, I scanned my Midwest childhood, former life as a musical theater dancer, and transition into grad school. I have always loved colorful people, and she did look familiar.

John Hart and Dennis Mayer, both of Southern California, were arrested this week on the Caribbean island of Dominica after they were seen “naked, fondling each other” from the balcony of their cabin Celebrity Summit cruise ship in plain sight of people on land. Both seafaring sodomites plead guilty in court today to “indecent exposure” but claimed they weren’t committing public acts of buggery. ”They were struck by the beautiful mountains, the clean and clear fresh air and were having a few cocktails, and so threw caution to the wind,” their lawyer told the Dominican court. Dharun Ravi, the former roommate of Tyler Clementi, a gay Rutgers University student who committed suicide, was convicted this morning of hate crimes. Twenty-year-old Ravi used a webcam set up in the dorm room they shared to spy on Clementi on several occasions, which he announced over Twitter to classmates and watched from a friend’s room. Clementi — who knew about the webcam spying, requested a room change, and had complained to an RA about his roommate — eventually jumped off the George Washington Bridge. Keep reading »

Kirk Cameron Is Even More Self-Righteous And Bigoted Than We Thought

Color me disgusted. I thought I lost all respect for Kirk Cameron back when the newly born-again sitcom star had a big moral hissy fit about his co-star Julie McCullough’s past as a Playboy centerfold and got her fired from “Growing Pains.” But after the incredibly offensive, self-righteous comments Cameron made to Piers Morgan, I somehow lost even more respect for him. His respect account is overdrawn, let’s put it that way.

Look, it’s not like I was surprised to hear the former Mike Seaver say he doesn’t support gay marriage. Not after the whole Playboy thing. But what he said about homosexuality in general was shockingly intolerant, even for him. Cameron told Morgan, ”I think that it’s … unnatural. I think that it’s detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization.”
