“Big Brother 15″ Bigotry: Racism, Sexism & Homophobia, Oh My!

Big Brother Bigotry: Racism, Sexism & Homophobia, Oh My!

See larger version here.

A few weeks ago, I tried to convince y’all to watch my favorite summer reality show, “Big Brother.” What I forgot to mention is that because of the 24-hour live feeds, the houseguests can, will and have been caught saying all manner of offensive things. But the cast of “Big Brother 15″ has really, really, really overachieved in this department, garnering tons of attention for the excessive sexist, racist and homophobic comments that have been caught on camera — and they’ve only been in there for less than two weeks, with many more to go. With all the fuss over DOMA and, oh, treating gay people like equals, bigots are starting to feel really neglected. Don’t worry, folks, because the Family Research Council —famous for its anti-gay agenda — is hosting a dinner in Washington, D.C. for “former homosexuals” to celebrate their return to the straight and narrow. The dinner would be in honor of something called “Ex-Gay Pride Month,” which is proposed to start July 31st. Keep reading »

Pakistan, Nigeria, and Kenya are some of the world’s most vehemently anti-gay countries. Coincidentally enough, these countries also have some of the highest Google searches for gay porn. Searches like “shemale sex,” “teen anal sex,” “man fucking man,” “gay sex pics,” and “anal sex pics” have the some of the highest volumes of searches in these countries. Pakistan and Nigeria rank in the top five on Google searches for “gay sex pics”and “anal sex pics” while Kenya ranks number one for these searches. It makes a lot of sense that people in these countries would turn to the Internet for their needs. Since homosexuality is so widely opposed, there are very few openly gay people. That does not, however, mean that there are any fewer gay people. Unable to foster healthy and public homosexual relationships, gay people predominantly restrict their sexuality to Google searches. Additionally, since  homosexuality is neither commonplace nor understood, there is also a fascination with it. People tend to be curious about what is forbidden, and apparently gay sex is no exception. [Huffington PostGoogle TrendsPew Global[Photo of URL search via Shutterstock]

According to a Russian bill that passed by a unanimous vote, it would be illegal to tell children that gay people exist or that homosexuality is socially equal to heterosexuality. The bill has passed Russia’s lower house of parliament and now heads to its upper house, where it is expected to pass. President Vladimir Putin supports signing the bill into law.

Don’t worry, Russia! If you pretend things don’t exist, they just disappear on their own! Keep reading »

Erin Page and Kelly Ayotte

Erin Faith Page was chosen to represent students at New England College’s commencement this year. The school also chose Senator Kelly Ayotte as a keynote speaker at the event, offering her an honorary degree. The problem? Erin is an out lesbian who believes that Ayotte’s conservative politics make her a terrible choice for the honor.

But New England College, a small, private liberal arts college with around 1,800 students is sticking by its choice. ”The College is pleased to have Senator Ayotte speak at our Commencement Ceremony as we have a rich tradition of welcoming differing viewpoints and celebrating freedom of speech,” NEC’s Vice President for Academic Affairs Mark Watman told The Frisky. In case you’re not familiar with Ayotte, she is staunchly anti-gay marriage, supports the Defense of Marriage Act, and most recently voted against the gun control bill. In a petition created by Page, she writes that Ayotte: Keep reading »

My college best friend and I coined the term “bipolar week.”  It was used to describe a week filled with both overwhelmingly amazing events and truly terrible moments: winning a prestigious award and then getting dumped by your boyfriend, or perhaps acing a midterm and losing a childhood pet. When reflecting on this past week, in terms of LGBT rights, I could really only describe it as a week “having or relating to two poles or extremities.” The highs: two cases before the Supreme Court to treat gays and lesbians like, you know, actual people.

The low you ask?  Well the low can be found in Kansas. It’s so ridiculous it might as well be a perverse Oz: a bill passed in the State Senate which has language that would quarantine those who are HIV-positive or have AIDS.  I would insert a Judy Garland joke about being a gay icon, but this is really not a laughing matter.  It’s completely f**ked! Former three-term Senator Alan Simpson of Wyoming is an equal opportunity critic, throwing judgement at both President Obama and his own Republican party.  He’s known to be blunt with his opinions (regardless of hate mail) and this past week was no exception. He spoke frankly to a reporter at a local Chamber of Commerce in his hometown of Cody, Wyoming about gay rights, abortion, and why Republicans should stay out of social issues.

In a surprisingly candid comment, Simpson said, “[Abortion] is a hideous thing. It’s terrible. … But it’s a deeply intimate and personal thing. … Men legislators shouldn’t even vote on it.” Wow, that’s not even an opinion that man liberal politicians espouse!
