New Jersey Governor Chris Christie Issues Ban On Ex-Gay Therapy

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie Issues Ban On Ex-Gay Therapy

Chris Christie may not have done much bill-signing on Friday, but the same can’t be said for today. The AP reports that the governor is set to sign a bill that will prevent licensed therapists from trying to turn gay teens straight. New Jersey will join California as the second state to outlaw “gay conversion therapy.” Christie has already signed a note that will accompany the bill; in it, he cites his own belief that people are born gay and that homosexuality is not a sin. Read more on Newser…

Piper in prison on Orange Is The New Black

It’s safe to say that Netflix’s latest original series, “Orange is the New Black,” is nothing short of binge-worthy. I devoured the entire first season in under 96 hours (seriously). Groundbreaking on many levels, the show openly displays queer female sexuality and features a uniquely complex portrayal of a black transgender woman (played by the brilliant black trans actress Laverne Cox). What’s more, the vibrant cast of diverse characters offers viewers a rare exploration of what privilege is and how it works. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the show’s main character, Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), a perfect lesson in privilege.

I can’t stand Piper. I find her whiny, entitled, possessive, incredibly self-obsessed, an emblem of unchecked privilege. But I actually think that’s intentional; Piper would be the character we all root for, when in reality, she seems to be one of the least liked. As Salamishah Tillet noted over at The Nation, the main character of “Orange” probably had to be white and college-educated for the show (and memoir upon which it’s based) to get picked up, and this is a valid point. But with Piper, we’re also forced to come face to face with her privilege, and we can’t stand what we see. [Spoilers after the jump!] Keep reading »

Sandy Rios is both an American Family Association talk show host and a Fox News contributor, so naturally when she spoke with anti-gay Chicago pastor, Erwin Lutzer, some pretty offensive words were exchanged.

The two both oppose same-sex marriage and use the bogus argument that homosexuality is like pedophilia in that even though there is “love” in these relationships, the people involved should not be able to get married. According to Right Wing Watch, Lutzer said, “A pedophile I’m sure says that he loves children — as a matter of fact, he does — but you can see how destructive that love is.” That comparison is nothing new in the anti-gay argument, but Sandy Rios then went on to make a new and uniquely offensive comparison. “Big Brother 15″ Bigotry: Racism, Sexism & Homophobia, Oh My!

Big Brother Bigotry: Racism, Sexism & Homophobia, Oh My!

See larger version here.

A few weeks ago, I tried to convince y’all to watch my favorite summer reality show, “Big Brother.” What I forgot to mention is that because of the 24-hour live feeds, the houseguests can, will and have been caught saying all manner of offensive things. But the cast of “Big Brother 15″ has really, really, really overachieved in this department, garnering tons of attention for the excessive sexist, racist and homophobic comments that have been caught on camera — and they’ve only been in there for less than two weeks, with many more to go. With all the fuss over DOMA and, oh, treating gay people like equals, bigots are starting to feel really neglected. Don’t worry, folks, because the Family Research Council —famous for its anti-gay agenda — is hosting a dinner in Washington, D.C. for “former homosexuals” to celebrate their return to the straight and narrow. The dinner would be in honor of something called “Ex-Gay Pride Month,” which is proposed to start July 31st. Keep reading »

Pakistan, Nigeria, and Kenya are some of the world’s most vehemently anti-gay countries. Coincidentally enough, these countries also have some of the highest Google searches for gay porn. Searches like “shemale sex,” “teen anal sex,” “man fucking man,” “gay sex pics,” and “anal sex pics” have the some of the highest volumes of searches in these countries. Pakistan and Nigeria rank in the top five on Google searches for “gay sex pics”and “anal sex pics” while Kenya ranks number one for these searches. It makes a lot of sense that people in these countries would turn to the Internet for their needs. Since homosexuality is so widely opposed, there are very few openly gay people. That does not, however, mean that there are any fewer gay people. Unable to foster healthy and public homosexual relationships, gay people predominantly restrict their sexuality to Google searches. Additionally, since  homosexuality is neither commonplace nor understood, there is also a fascination with it. People tend to be curious about what is forbidden, and apparently gay sex is no exception. [Huffington PostGoogle TrendsPew Global[Photo of URL search via Shutterstock]

According to a Russian bill that passed by a unanimous vote, it would be illegal to tell children that gay people exist or that homosexuality is socially equal to heterosexuality. The bill has passed Russia’s lower house of parliament and now heads to its upper house, where it is expected to pass. President Vladimir Putin supports signing the bill into law.

Erin Page and Kelly Ayotte

Erin Faith Page was chosen to represent students at New England College’s commencement this year. The school also chose Senator Kelly Ayotte as a keynote speaker at the event, offering her an honorary degree. The problem? Erin is an out lesbian who believes that Ayotte’s conservative politics make her a terrible choice for the honor.

But New England College, a small, private liberal arts college with around 1,800 students is sticking by its choice. ”The College is pleased to have Senator Ayotte speak at our Commencement Ceremony as we have a rich tradition of welcoming differing viewpoints and celebrating freedom of speech,” NEC’s Vice President for Academic Affairs Mark Watman told The Frisky. In case you’re not familiar with Ayotte, she is staunchly anti-gay marriage, supports the Defense of Marriage Act, and most recently voted against the gun control bill. In a petition created by Page, she writes that Ayotte: Keep reading »
