Living in a dorm is an important milestone of college life, but it’s not the most aesthetically pleasing experience. Case in point: one of my friend’s freshman year dorm room had a giant drain in the middle of the floor, like an easy-to-hose-out dog kennel for humans. Charming, right? Last year, my coworkers compiled this great list of dorm decorating tips, and this year I wanted to go a bit more in-depth, focusing on a few ways you can make your dorm look a little more home-y, and a little less dorm-y. I recently bought myself a Dolly Parton prayer candle (because hello, it was $7 and I truly do view her as a powerful, sequined deity), and let me tell you: I’m pretty sure my repeated requests for for bigger hair and sassier comebacks are paying off. Since lighting it, I can even hit the high notes in “Jolene”! Hallelujah!
Just in case you’re also in need of some divine celebrity intervention, I decided to round up 10 celebrity prayer candles you can buy (including my precious Dolly), and an example of the prayer you might want to use for each one. Click on the gallery above to see how celebs like Saint Kanye, Mother Minaj, and Angel Bieber can help you achieve your dreams!
One of my weaknesses has always been eccentric little shops with tapestries hung in the front window and oh-my-God-are-those-real human skulls displayed on shelves. Bonus points if there is a woman behind the counter who resembles a character from “Hocus Pocus.” I could spend hours smelling all the essential oils and digging through the assortment of weird, witchy merchandise. I recently bought a porcelain palmistry palm statue for my desk at just this type of curiosity shop, and I thought it might be fun to round up some other home decorating pieces with a similar vibe. I am of the mind that there is no such thing as an ugly bookshelf. As long as it has books on it, preferably a few old ones that I can open and smell shamelessly, any collection of books — whether messy or organized, displayed on an antique or an IKEA — is beautiful. That being said, there is definitely such a thing as a bookshelf that is even more awesome than usual. I scoured the internet and found 10 examples of not-so-average bookshelves that I want in my house, like, now. Click on the gallery to check ‘em out!
My brother and his girlfriend are visiting me in Nashville this week, and I’m so excited (and honestly, a little nervous) to host my first real live house guests. I’m dedicated to being the best host I can be, so I’ve been eagerly compiling bits of advice for having house guests, and polling the other Frisky ladies for their favorite hosting tips. My home office is so poorly lit that all of my video chats with far-flung friends start off with them saying something along the lines of, “Oh it’s so nice to see…umm…a vague outline of your face!” Obviously I need a new desk lamp. I’ve been scouring thrift stores for cheap options, and let me tell you, there are a hell of a lot of ugly lamp shades in this world. Luckily they don’t have to stay that way. Click through for 10 DIY ways to spruce up a lamp shade!
Julie and her boyfriend Evan both own a ton of records, and when they moved in together and blended their collections, their vinyl library got even bigger. Awesome, right? So you guys may remember The Ugly Desk, which I bought on a whim and de-uglified with a couple coats of teal paint. Ready for part two of the saga? The Ugly Desk came with an Ugly Chair, pictured above. This chair might actually be uglier than the desk — the style and fabric are very mid-90s accounting firm conference room, which is not exactly the vibe I go for in my home decorating scheme. I’ve kept it this long because it’s surprisingly comfy and a good height for the desk. So here’s my question: is this chair worth an attempted makeover? I was thinking of trying to recover the seat and back with a cute fabric (maybe polka dots?), and I could even spray paint the legs and armrests if I was feeling really crafty. Keep reading »
