Etsy Spotlight: Mirror, Mirror On The Wall

Mirrors are a great way to make a room seem bigger or add visual interest to your space. Mirrors with ornate frames can hold their own next to framed art and photos, and I love how unexpected they look mixed in with non-reflective decorations. Another great way to utilize a gorgeous mirror? Lay it down on your dresser or vanity and stack your prettiest jewelry and perfume bottles on it–suddenly your bedroom will feel like an old school boudoir. We scoured Etsy and found 8 mirrors in a variety of gorgeous vintage frames — all for 50 bucks or less. Click through to check ‘em out…

Decor Tips That’ll Make Your Family Stop Fighting

Your home is filled with sights, sounds, and scents. Which ones should you select to build positive relationships among the members of your family? This is the third article in a three part series about using home design to enhance family ties.

Consider the colors you put on your walls, furniture, and floors. Colors that aren’t very saturated but are pretty bright will put you and your family in a positive mood – and when we’re in good moods, we’re more likely to get along with others. We’re also better at problem solving and more creative. Brightness is just what it sounds like–baby blue is brighter than navy blue. Saturation is a little trickier–it is how pure a color is–kelly green is more saturated than olive green. Sage-y greens have the levels of saturation and brightness best for building relationships–but there are blues and many other colors that also set the right tone. Read more…

Live It Up With Lime (And Cilantro)

Okay, so maybe it’s a bit weird that I love the smell of Ambient Hand’s Lime Cilantro candles so much. After all, you’d think that the combined power of lime and cilantro together would make your house smell like the kitchen at Chipotle. But somehow these candles manage to make everything smell sweet — not cloyingly so — and fresh. And they come three to a pack, which means you can spread ‘em out and get your whole apartment smelling great in no time. So mix up a margarita and light one (or three) up.

Spending last week in Los Angeles gave me a major case of real estate envy. Imagine having more than 400 square feet to decorate! Speaking of decorating, I was also super inspired by the laid back look of the shops in Silverlake, with their vaguely ’70s beach-meets-desert vibe. I can’t wait to buy some succulents at the farmer’s market this weekend and, once I have some extra cash, add some more SoCal cool to my East Coast digs. Above are some pieces that would do the trick — find out where to get them after the jump!
