Are you single, Semetic, and ready to mingle? Well, do I have the party for you, girl! The Matzo Ball. What are your plans for Christmas Eve — eat Chinese food and watch “The Notebook” again? Well, screw that! Slip into a bangin’ outfit and head to a celebration packed with more tribe members than Boca Raton in the winter. The Matzoh Ball is like a real-life version of JDate with alcohol and DJs (don’t worry, cooler ones than at your Bat Mitzvah). The Balls are happening in major cities across North America, tickets are $25 bucks for a night of dry humping some chosen peeps on the dance floor, and let me tell you, it’s money well spent. I went last year and did some things my Rabbi would not call kosher. But he was fun and circumcised — bonus! So, turn that “I wish I celebrated Christmas” frown upside down and break yourself off a piece of that Matzo Ball! [The Matzo Ball] Keep reading »

These last few days have just been a wee bit stressful, trudging from store to store as I started and finished my holiday shopping in mere days. So, now that I’ve wrapped my last gift, it’s time to relax with a spiked beverage. Warm drinks like eggnog usually put me to sleep, but this variation on the classic drink from Tanuki Tavern in New York City includes a shot of espresso, so Christmas caroling, here I come! Have you seen that Target commercial where the guy gives his date a beautiful necklace, only to have the woman look kind of uncomfortable and announce that she didn’t think they were quite “there” yet? After a flash of hurt crosses his face, he zings back that he bought it at Target so it was super cheap. I always high-five that guy in my head, but truth is, I’ve been an ungrateful giftee in the past.
However, it’s also the truth that I’ve received a lot of crappy gifts. Some were heartfelt, others were just dumb. So in light of the fact that we’re in primo gift-exchange season, I put together some guidelines for how to handle the gifts you get that really, they shouldn’t have … Keep reading »
Men don’t tend to be great at buying nice, thoughtful gifts. You really can’t blame us — we don’t expect anything more than nostril-hair trimmers for our birthdays and a decent tie or two on Christmas, so we end up giving similar gifts to women, which doesn’t always turn out well (I’m nursing a head wound right now). Here’s a look at a few thoughtless gift ideas that could only have come from the warped mind of a dude. Keep reading »
Everyone over does it during the holidays, so no judgments when you walk away from the table suddenly looking like you’re three months pregnant with a food baby. So now more than ever is the time to add jeans with an elastic feature to help your Christmas pig-outs. The LA Times got into some tummy-tucking jeans, and turns out there are quite a few options out there. Like, for example, M’Chic denim (right), which includes a Spanx-like slimming panel to suck in your holiday spare tire.
Only thing is, wouldn’t wearing what’s essentially a girdle make a full belly feel worse? We say, take to the maternity jeans—like the elastic-waisted mom-to-be model from Citizens—and let it all hang out. Or just go for some Santa pants. [LA Times] Keep reading »
I did something I’ve never done this holiday season: I bought The Girl I’m Currently Dating a necklace for Magic Space Baby Day (i.e., Christmas). A silver, heart-shaped locket to be exact. I did this because she has a beautiful, graceful neck and I wanted her to be able to show it off. And I think this necklace does that — it’s subtle. It merely accents something that was gorgeous to begin with. I’m proud of the gift. But I’ve never purchased jewelry before. I was under the impression it was a lame, cliché choice. Keep reading »
Annika and I were just reminiscing about the Christmas of our younger years, and we agreed that the holiday has evolved for us, from revolving around anticipation and presents to focusing on family and thoughtful gestures. And the traditions have changed, too.
One of my favorite albums of the year is the Julian Casablancas solo record Phrazes for the Young — if you’re a fan of The Strokes, especially their first record, and you love Julian’s voice as much as I do, buy this album, like, now. One of the bonus tracks on the album if you download it off of iTunes is “I Wish It Was Christmas Today,” which originally was a skit on “Saturday Night Live” featuring Horatio Sanz, Jimmy Fallon, Chris Kattan, and Tracy Morgan. Last night, Casablancas performed on Jimmy Fallon’s show, and the host, as well as Sanz, came on stage to assist him as he sang the holiday tune. Check it out above and remind yourself of the original, after the jump… Keep reading »
A breakup almost always sucks, but this time of year it can be especially painful. The good news is the holidays can also serve as a wonderful distraction from your heartache — and you don’t have to worry about shelling out money for a gift (or acting delighted when he gives you socks again). Luckily, not only are there plenty of reasons to love being single at this time of year, there are lots of ways to ease your loneliness, process your feelings, and improve your mood, too. As if the holidays aren’t already depressing enough, they can be just a tad bit more depressing when you’re single. There’s no one to buy gifts for, and worse, no one to buy gifts for you. Worse still, after the gift-giving holidays are over, there’s no one to kiss on New Year’s Eve.
Well, now that we’ve thoroughly depressed you, we’ll cheer you up with our tips for handling the holidays when you’re flying solo. Keep reading »
