I walk through busy shopping thoroughfares and holiday gift markets and people watch. I sip hot apple cider and make mental notes. Target and Neiman Marcus are at absolute opposite ends of the retail spectrum, which is all the more reason for them to want to come together, right? Whatever the logic behind their decision to collaborate, we have no complaints, even less so now that we’ve gotten to see each of the 55 items from the holiday collection. With prices starting at $7.99, you’d be hard-pressed not to find something that you or someone you know needs this coming season (especially considering, hello, holiday shopping is about to become a legitimate concern). The collection doesn’t hit stores (at Target, Neiman Marcus, and both online sources) until December 1, but the items are sure to sell out fast, so it’s best to go into it knowing exactly what you want. As much as I would love to tell you to take the holidays off from having to worry about money, the fact is, the bazillion dollars we Americans spend every year celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year’s are all the more reason to be responsible about your finances. The blur and excitement of the season can have you blowing your cash as if it were Monopoly money, and if you aren’t careful, you’re gonna wake up in January with a worse feeling of dread than you did the morning after your office party with vague memories of drunkenly puking on your boss’s shoe. You probably knew that last Thursday was a holiday (Thanksgiving), but did you know that today is one, too? This morning I learned that it’s “Cyber Monday,” the online counterpart to Black Friday. Even though the term is new to me, it was coined in 2005 by a retailers association, and it finally seems to be catching on — there’s even a website dedicated to telling you where the deals are: CyberMonday.com.
