According To NYFW, Black Is The New Black For Next Summer

Spring and summer fashion is generally pretty predictable insofar as it is, well, summery — think airy, diaphanous fabrics in light, muted colors accented by eye-catching brights, and you’ve just about hit the nail on the head every time. As the S/S 2013 shows crop up, we get a good glimpse at what to expect come next year … and is it just me, or is it all turning out to be a bit darker than usual? That’s not to say that the season’s requisite lightness, comparably more cheerful than that of Autumn/Winter styles, has been sacrificed in favor of deeper, moodier hues; it’s just that all of the whites and pastels are offset by a whole lot of black. I’m the last to complain — black is the predominate color in my wardrobe — so yes, I am unquestionably biased, but I think the contrast serves to make the clothes all the more striking. Are you, like me, thrilled that some of your favorite black pieces might just make the spring/summer cut, or are you all about the whites and brights come June, regardless of what the runway dictates? Anna Piaggi, Italian Fashion Editor And Style Innovator, Dies At 81

Today is a sad day in fashion as we mourn the loss of Anna Piaggi, 81, the celebrated Italian fashion journalist and glamorously eccentric sartorial icon best recognized for her visionary double-page spreads of image and text in Vogue Italia. Piaggi emerged on the style scene in the 1960s as editor of Ariadne, Italy’s inaugural women’s magazine, and went on to work with a number of high-profile publications, including a position as contributing editor at the Italian incarnation of Vogue. “Oh, this old thing? Psh. It’s Dior.John Galliano may be an anti-Semitic coot with pigtails and an ill-advised pornstache, but he is also a design hero … or villain, depending on who you ask. Regardless, I will be wearing this crustacean couture look to my next blue-tie event. Get it? Like those blue bands they use to hold the claws together? Hahahaha. Ugh. [World of Wonder]

The Best Of Front Row Fashion At Paris Haute Couture Week

Is it already that time again? I always look forward to the big fashion weeks, even though the shows run counter to the current season — it’s sweltering outside, but the promise of fall/winter fashion still thrills me. Sorry, but I’m a sweater-and-boots kind of girl… not that there’s any sweaters to be found during haute couture week. The shows in Paris invite not only the most impressively ostentatious of what fashion has to offer, but also an A-list crowd just as show-stopping as the clothes themselves. Well, almost. Click through to check out my picks for the best-dressed from the front row so far, and don’t be surprised if you happen to see these ladies in the dresses off the runway come fall…

The Council of Fashion Designers of America, better known as the CFDA, holds an awards ceremony each year to celebrate achievement in fashion design — the Oscars of the fashion set, if you will. Emerging a winner is a victory akin to Diane von Furstenberg (she’s the president of the Council) giving you a little tap on the head and saying, “You’ve made it.” The nature of the ceremony is to honor fresh and emerging talent, and while last night’s event also crowned winners (Tommy Hilfiger and Rei Kawakubo, respectively) for both Lifetime and International achievements, some of the victors are practically unheard of outside of the insider-y design realm. If you have an interest in high fashion, it behooves you to acquaint yourself with these up-and-coming game changers, because chances are they’ll be the next hot names to come up on the mainstream style radar… well, I guess they already are.

Instagram is the latest billion-dollar craze, but you probably won’t see me hopping on the bandwagon. I am biologically averse to anything that leads millions of middle schoolers with iPhones to believe that they are, in fact, skilled photographers. The pictures aren’t terrible, but I hesitate to call anything produced by a smartphone app “art.” I guess it really just depends whose hands it falls into, because British fashion photographer Nick Knight has defied my reasoning with the first-ever high fashion Instagram shoot.
