"Dirty girls"

I watched this 17-minute documentary called “Dirty Girls” and my heart fell out of my chest for these girls. Shot by then-high school senior Michael Lucia in 1996, the film investigates a group of 13-year-old girls with a reputation for being “dirty” –as in unwashed and unclean. The “Dirty Girl” crew is spearheaded by two sisters, Amanda and Harper, who just don’t give a fuck what other people think of them. The girls make a riot grrl zine that they distribute around school — and some of the worst criticism they get is (surprise, surprise) not from boys, but from other girls, many of whom appear to espouse an “alternative” aesthetic, too.

I was listening to Pandora yesterday and randomly–so, so randomly–Garth Brooks’ song “Friends In Low Places” came on. From the first few notes, I was instantly transported back to my rural high school gym, line dancing in a PE uniform and hating my life. But you know what? In that moment I also felt a pang of nostalgia for my tiny Oregon high school (my graduating class had a whopping 75 people in it), and I thought about all the other strange and awful and wonderful experiences I had there. So in honor of Garth Brooks and muddy trucks and parties in the woods, here are 10 ridiculous things that happen at rural, small town high schools… Keep reading »

All The Famous People Who Went To Our High Schools

We got into a discussion yesterday about famous people who went to our high school — those who we knew and those who we didn’t. It got really interesting when Julie told us about an infamous member of her graduating class. Not to be all name-droppy, but here’s a complete list of the most infamous/famous alums from our high schools after the jump. No, we didn’t include ourselves on the list. But who knows, maybe someday … Keep reading »

8 Strange Cases Of Adults Impersonating Teenagers

How’s this for crazy — 24-year-old Carissa Hads of Massachusetts was arrested after posing as a 17-year-old boy in order to gain the affections of a 15-year-old girl who had no idea she was actually a girl. Dye allegedly used a “an artificial flesh-colored penis” to simulate real male genitals, and wore a back brace in order to conceal her breasts.

And she apparently treated the teen girl like her actual girlfriend, purchasing several cell phones for her, along with a Kindle Fire tablet. The girl used the cell phones to take and send nude pictures of herself to Hads, who was posing as a teenage father named “Wilson.”

Hads is being charged with traveling across state lines for the purpose of coercing of enticing a minor to have sexual intercourse.

Strangely, though, Hads is hardly the only person that’s impersonated a teenager. Whether in order to woo teenage lovers or to escape the realities of becoming an adult, there are several cases of both men and women who posed as high school students. I literally have nightmares about going back to high school (it’s my standard anxiety dream that I’m back in high school and totally unprepared for a test and can’t remember where my classroom is), so these stories are totally fascinating to me. After the jump, eight stories of adults pretending to be teens.

I’m just going to put it out there: Zach Galifianakis is the man of my dreams. He’s chivalrous, hilarious, aerodynamic, beautifully bearded, and friends with Tim and Eric — what more could I want in a life mate? Despite how well Zach and I obviously know each other, I never would have suspected that this is what he looked like in high school. So handsome! [Crushable]

Dawn Loggins Overcomes Homelessness To Attend Harvard

Watch Video

Dawn Loggins spent the summer before her senior year of high school at the prestigious North Carolina Governors School, but when the summer was over, nobody from her family came to pick her up. Her troubled parents, plagued by poverty and drug abuse, had abandoned her, and Dawn was left homeless. She was forced to rely on the kindness of friends and school faculty for a place to stay. She got a job at her high school as a janitor to support herself and continued to apply herself in school. And it paid off: Loggins was accepted to Harvard University’s class of 2016. “If there is anybody at all who has a dream,” Dawn told a local TV station,”then they can definitely make it happen. There are no excuses. It depends on you and no one else.”

Can You Name This Famous Face?

Long before they were cool musicians, most of these celebs were dorky kids just like you and me — and we’ve got the proof. This selection of junior high and high school photos from some of the world’s top musicians confirms that even the most jaded rockstar was probably kind of a dweeb when they were younger. Which begs the question: Can you match the nerdy class pic with the famous face?

Mavis may have gotten older, but she hasn’t exactly grown up or figured out  how to let go of the past, especially when it comes to her love life.

Let’s face it: generally the expectations and beliefs we have about love in high school are simplistic or just straight up wrong. Oh, how little I knew back then, but hopefully, if you’re not like Mavis, you’ve learned a thing or two. In honor of the release of “Young Adult,” here are seven things we’ve learned about love since high school.  Keep reading »

High School Football Coach Spanked For Giving Freshmen Access To Porn

Men & Porn
10 reasons men love to watch. Read More »

There seems to be an influx in creepy football coaches, or at least in the public stepping forward to report them: An assistant coach at Staples High School in Westport, Connecticut is in trubs for allegedly providing freshman players with his personal username and password for a membership-only porn site. A student reported the incident to faculty members after he overheard the coach relaying the porno password to team members. The coach has since been suspended from his position and barred from any contact with team members or students. Helping young teen boys look at porn certainly does not compare in any way, shape or form to the sexual abuse that occurred at Penn State. But, still, a fully-grown male providing porn to 14-year-old boys is kinda gross, right? I mean, he knows these kids know how to use Google. [Deadspin
