How High Is Too High–For Your Heels?

We all have our limits when it comes to the height of our heels. I’m prone to wearing more extreme shoes, I suppose, because I’ve been short since forever. I stopped growing when I was 13–my mom blames it on me becoming vegetarian at that age–and in order to not seem too midget-y, I took to wearing heels early on. I’m only five feet tall without shoes on, so my feet have adapted to wearing unreasonably high heels over time–even though they often make my friends cringe. My highest pair of heels maxes out at around 5 inches and they’re perfectly comfortable, because I’ve learned that it’s often not the heel height that makes shoes suck, but the slope of the arch that creates the most pain. Too extreme an arch and your foot will constantly be sliding forward into the toe of your shoe. That’s why I love a shoe with a small platform on it–it helps soften the slope and make the shoe infinitely more wearable. But everybody’s different. I have friends who can’t bear to walk in anything but flats. Others that wouldn’t be caught dead without their stilettos on. So tell us: What’s your take on high heels? How high is too high and what’s just right for your feet? Keep reading »

Soapbox: You’re Sexy Without The Life-Threatening High Heels

You may have thought the weekend’s biggest news was the hurricane, but there was something even more shocking afoot: People magazine reports that Victoria Beckham had been spotted in flats! Forget telltale signs of climate change via drastic weather patterns; the apocalypse is surely upon us when Posh Spice is willing to be caught on camera without her signature stilettos.

Okay look, at the risk of being typecast as a fashion allergic feminazi, I have to just come right out and say it: I am, generally speaking, against high heels. Why, you might ask, have I joined the ranks of sensible aunts and foot doctors everywhere? It’s about as simple as this: I don’t think women should participate in activities that physically harm them or curb their capacity to get up and go should the situation call for it. I believe there are less limiting ways to look pretty.

I get that they’re sexy as hell. Keep reading »

Victoria Beckham’s High-Heel Dreams Come Tumbling Down

Nobody tells Victoria Beckham that she’s not allowed to wear the highest of sky high heels whenever she wants. That’s practically sacrilege! But owing to complications from the recent birth of her daughter Harper Seven, Beckham’s doctors have requested that Posh stick to flats. It seems Beckham suffered a slipped disk during her pregnancy, and the heels threaten to significantly worsen her condition. So look for a significantly shorter Victoria during upcoming fashion week. Already, it seems, fashion sites are forecasting a flat trend. We’ll believe it when we see it — and Beckham actually following doctors orders. After all, this is a woman who donned 7-inch Louboutin heels while she was pregnant. [Daily Mail] Keep reading »

Woman Accused Of Murder By Stiletto — Are High Heels Deadly Weapons?

This week, high heels became exhibit A in a crime scene. A Georgia woman allegedly murdered her boyfriend with the pointy heel of her shoe. 46-year-old Thelma Carter is in custody after her live-in partner, Robert Higdon was found dead in their trailer with stab wounds believed to have been caused by her spiked high heel.

Here’s where it gets stranger: this is not the first stiletto attack of 2011. In fact there have been at least five by my count.

So, everybody knows that walking in heels in sand is virtually impossible. So why in the heck would both Katie Holmes and her little girl Suri Cruise wear heels to play around in the sand? Male Student Called Out For Wearing High Heels To School

A high school boy in Tampa Bay, Florida, was asked to leave school after he wore high heels to class. No, it wasn’t because other students made fun of him (which yes, they did). It was because the school had a problem with it. As one of the student’s friends explained, “He likes the way they make him feel. They make him feel more confident, and he just likes to wear them.” But, she continued, “The first time he felt shame was when he was called out of school.” School principal Bob Heilmann said he made the decision to have the boy remove his shoes because he was afraid the student would be bullied. “As a principal of a high school, I have to take the paternal side and make sure he’s going to be okay,” he said. “Anytime anyone goes out from, quote, ‘the norm’ or anytime anyone wants to make a statement, you have to be willing to take what comes with it.” What do you think? Should boys be allowed to wear heels to school? [Fox Tampa Bay] Keep reading »
