During Fashion Week it’s easy to forget some of the pretty ladies walking down the runway do more than just act as coat hangers for fabulously over-priced garments. That’s why our girls at Glam put together this list of models who do more.
The (oft over-used) term supermodel gets tossed around a lot. But whether or not these catwalk queens have been officially coined with that status, they’re all super in our eyes. Somewhere between strutting down the catwalk in New York and Paris, and shooting high-fashion spreads at some exotic locale in the South Pacific, these beauties have also found time to become social activists, authors, and aspiring actresses–proving that they’re much more than just a pretty face.
The Writer: Alek Wek — Discovered at an outdoor market in London, Alek Wek’s strikingly unconventional look can be found grazing the catwalks of leading designers across the globe. But what has remained undiscovered, is her unconventional upbringing in the south of Sudan. Published in 2007, Wek released the autobiography, Alek, which probes into those youthful years: the bold escape from a home torn by civil-war and ultimate climb to stardom.

On last night’s episode of Project Runway (I’m sorry if you missed it because I told you it was on at 10pm, rather than 9pm — here’s the recap), the contestants had to create cocktail dresses out of eco-friendly fabrics selected by their models. For some reason, the silk/hemp blend that was popular with many of the models seems to come in just two colors, an ugly bronze and a slightly cheap-looking pale good. Apparently, it was very difficult to manipulate — I have never seen hemlines so crooked. Guest judge Natalie Portman was as ladylike as ever, always saying something good about the design before giving her criticisms, and in the end, Suede’s innovative criss-crossing of fabrics won her over. Heidi Klum even said she’s wear the dress if she were 10 years younger. Heidi, you don’t need to shave off 10 years to wear this dress.

While watching Project Runway‘s season premiere and the promo videos for tonight’s episode, we noticed that some of the contestants (and Heidi) have awesome personal style. Others, on the other hand, have questionable style. Now, this doesn’t mean the clothes they design are awful, but I think it does say something about a designer when he sports a rattail. After the jump, we judge Project Runway‘s style… Keep reading »
Heidi is awfully excited about a cartoon version of her that isn’t even as attractive as the real Heidi. But then, is anything as attractive as the real Heidi? [New York City, 7/15/08] Keep reading »
“Seal and I feel very lucky that we found each other. He’s my best friend. He would never go in through a door first. He always opens the door for me and steps back so I walk through.” — Heidi Klum [AHN] Keep reading »
David Beckham recently bought Victoria a vineyard in California’s Napa Valley. Apparently the two developed a passion for wine while they were in Spain (which also happens to be when Becks developed a passion for the nanny). But don’t think you’ll be able to go to the liquor store and pick up a bottle of Chateau Posh — it will be consumed by themselves and friends only. Check out some other extravagant celeb gifts after the jump. [MarieClaire.co.uk] Keep reading »

Sixty-something Sex Bomb Tom Jones has taken out a whopping $7 million insurance policy on his chest hair. While we’re not sure if that includes the trail that leads to the Golden Girls‘ promise land, we are sure that it is a waste of money. What’s he afraid of — a waxident? The insurance company, Lloyd’s of London, is also known for covering J.Lo’s booty, Heidi Klum’s legs, and Keith Richard’s fingers, so they were happy to add Tom and the handful of hair that entertains crowds in Las Vegas. Although, perhaps at his age, the pelvis-thrusting crooner would have been better off getting insurance to cover a cougar attack. [World Of Wonder] Keep reading »
