Nice Heels, Dude

Check out the boot to the left. Looks like something you (or your slightly slutty best friend) might wear, doesn’t it? While it is by fabulous female shoe designer Stuart Weitzman, this boot and its partner aren’t made for women. This is actually a guy’s boot, aka a “moot.” Weitzman custom-made this and a black patent-leather bootie with a silver heel for Justin Tranter, the lead singer of New York garage glam-rock band Semi-Precious Weapons. This is the first time Weitzman has ever done shoes for a man (in size 12 wide, no less), and Tranter adores his new kicks: “I love heels for two reasons: One, they make my amazing legs look even better and two, I love being able to make an artistic statement without even opening my mouth.” Spoken like a man who knows his shoes. One to Know: Shoe Designer Nicholas Kirkwood

You already know Jimmy Choo, Christian Louboutin, and Manolo Blahnik. The names practically speak for themselves. These three shoe designers are the top of the line and as popular as ever. Enter my newest obsession: Nicholas Kirkwood. His shoes simply make me swoon. They remind me of superheroes and villains. Actually, I’m pretty sure if Batman was a woman, she’d be fighting crime in one of these bad boys. His designs are aggressive, dark, and mysterious while also remaining glamorous and super feminine. This talented Brit jumpstarted his career in 2005 when he won the Conde Nast Footwear Emerging Talent award for his first collection. Later, in the spring of 2008, his signature stilettos and wedges walked the runways of designers such as Tommy Hilfiger, Doo.Ri, and 3.1 Phillip Lim. Instead of bows and baubles, he opts for an architectural shoe that has power and intrigue written all over it. To go along with his unique ideas, the shoes are crafted from somewhat unlikely sources like lizard, stingray, and buffalo horn. A true one-of-a-kind; there is nothing on the market quite like them. Even if Kirkwood’s shoes aren’t up your alley, there’s no questioning his artistry and innovation. As Kirkwood says, “They’re not for everybody. Only the truly fashion-forward, which is fine with us.” On the runways, Nicholas Kirkwood shod the Spring and Summer collections of Rodarte, Alberta Ferretti, and Pollini. [Glam] Keep reading »

Stiletto Run: On Your Marks…Get Set…

When it comes to women and shoes, the relationship is tight. Like men, there’s no limit to the things we’ll do for the ones that look good. In homage to the pairs that keep us on our toes, 150 fashionable women raced through the streets of Amsterdam’s shopping district for the 3rd Annual Stiletto Run. And the competition was steep, with a heel requirement of at least 3½ inches high and a grand prize of $15,000. With a sprint that would make you think they were wearing sneakers, these hot to trot contestants have got a motto: “Shopping is a sport.” (If you’re at a wicked shoe sale, it can even be a blood sport.) The 380-yard race has become so popular with spectators and runners that it has spawned sister events in Germany, Russia, Poland, and Sweden, but next year America should send in a ringer: Sarah Jessica Parker. We’ve all seen the Sex and the City star make a dash for it in her Manolos! [CNEWS] Keep reading »
