We’re jumping in halfway through Paris Couture Week, but better late than never, I always say! Elie Saab Sends Droolworthy Dresses Down The Runway At Paris Couture Week

Reason #5934 why being rich and famous wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world: Elie Saab. Actually, while we’re waxing hyperbolic, let’s give him the top slot. I can’t think of a single designer more imaginative, more unique, more timeless, or more committed to the most exquisite detail than Saab. It’s never conceptual or difficult to understand, but it’s also never boring, and it’s always stunningly beautiful. You know who I’d love to see in one of Saab’s designs? Kate Middleton. She would be flawless, no?

The Best Of Front Row Fashion At Paris Haute Couture Week

Is it already that time again? I always look forward to the big fashion weeks, even though the shows run counter to the current season — it’s sweltering outside, but the promise of fall/winter fashion still thrills me. Sorry, but I’m a sweater-and-boots kind of girl… not that there’s any sweaters to be found during haute couture week. The shows in Paris invite not only the most impressively ostentatious of what fashion has to offer, but also an A-list crowd just as show-stopping as the clothes themselves. Well, almost. Click through to check out my picks for the best-dressed from the front row so far, and don’t be surprised if you happen to see these ladies in the dresses off the runway come fall…

It’s undeniable that Jean Paul Gaultier’s design career — always innovative, always stunningly avant-garde — is well beyond deserving of an exhibit (really, his works could and should launch a museum). After over forty years in the business of haute couture, the designer is at long last the subject of a solo exposition at De Young Museum in San Francisco. Keep reading »

The Couture Collections Are Here! Our 18 Favorite Looks From Day 3

Julie just about summed it up in her favorite looks from the first two days of Haute Couture Week when she said, “The Paris couture collections make me absolutely giddy.” As a fashion-loving lady, there are so many things in its spectrum that excite me, but nothing makes me salivate so much as couture. Today, the last day of the shows, is all about the couture jewelry (we’re talking Dior Joaillerie, Chanel Joiallerie, and Van Cleef & Arpels), so let’s have a look at yesterday’s headliners: Jean Paul Gaultier, Valentino, and Elie Saab.

The Best Dressed At Haute Couture Week (Days 1 & 2)

We have now entered day two of the prestigious Paris Haute Couture Week, the spark that lights the fuse of fashion weeks to follow. Yesterday was Atelier Versace (for the first time since 2004!), Alexis Mabille, Christian Dior, and Giambattista Valli, among others. This morning, not one, but two Chanel shows took place, followed by Giorgio Armani Privé and Givenchy later in the day. Of course, it’s my long-standing dream to attend just one of these breathtaking ceremonies, but for the time being I’m forced to spectate from the sidelines. Couture Week brings out some of the biggest and brightest names in street style, and I’ll be damned if they weren’t dressed to the nines. The biggest turnout comes from models, actresses, superstars, and socialites, who no doubt have the means to show up the girls actually on the runway, but they tend to skew fairly casual for these festivities. Here are my choice looks from the past two days; expect another feature covering the next two!

Craig Lawrence’s Fall Collection Gets Better At Second Glance

Craig Lawrence Fashion Film from AnOther Magazine on Vimeo.

To simply view photos of Craig Lawrence’s knitwear collection isn’t enough to appreciate his unconventional designs. In fact, his Muppet-ish designs are downright laughable in photos. The best way to experience his fall/winter 2010 collection is through a video inspired by the abdication of crowns and which features model Anastasia Kuznetsova morphing — bending and twisting — from a sheer nude gown to a gold foil jacket. She’d probably look like a weather balloon in a still photo, but in the video Kuznetsova resembles an avant-garde tree at one point and a true rock star at another. Now that Lawrence has broken out on his own — after designing for another talented and far-out designer, Gareth Pugh — he’s definitely a couture force to be reckoned with.
