New York Times Asks If Teen Who Shot LGBTQ Classmate Was “Bullied” By “Flaunting”

lawrence king valentine road documentary

This week, HBO screened a documentary film, “Valentine Road,” about the 2008 murder of a 14-year-old boy, Lawrence King, by a classmate in Oxnard, California. King had been exploring his gender identity by wearing makeup and heels to school; he had told friends that he was gay and had asked 14-year-old Brandon McInerney to be his Valentine in front of other classmates. McInerney, who had a girlfriend, shot King in head during class in their middle school computer lab.

Heartbreaking. Inexcusable. And yet the New York Times’ film review by Neil Genzlinger actually dared to ask:

Was Mr. McInerney the one who was bullied, by Mr. King’s flaunting of his identity (including wearing makeup and heeled boots to school)?

A 26-year-old woman in South Africa named Duduzile Zozo was raped and murdered  because she is a lesbian. Zozo’s body was found  in a yard near her home on June 29 with part of a toilet brush in her vagina. She was yet another victim of “corrective rape,” or the erroneous idea that a homosexual woman can be made straight by raping her. The South African government released a statement last week condemning the violence and offering condolences to Zozo’s family, with the reminder:

“The Bill of Rights of our Constitution recognises and guarantees equality. This fundamental right enjoins South Africans not to discriminate against anyone on several grounds, including gender, sex and sexual orientation.”

This past week, 32-year-old mother of five Shaima Alawadi was found brutally beaten in her El Cajon, California, home, her head bashed in with a tire iron. She was taken unconscious to a local hospital, but just three days later her family opted to take her off life support. She died this past Saturday.

While police still haven’t officially labeled Alawadi’s death a hate crime, it’s clear that Alawadi’s ethnic and religious background was on the minds of the perpetrators. A note was left at the scene of the crime, and though police aren’t saying what the note said, they did reveal that a similar note was left at the house the previous month. Said Alawadi’s 17-year-old daughter Fatima, “A week ago they left a letter saying this is our country not yours you terrorist, and so my mom ignored that thinking it was just kids playing a prank. But the day they hit her, they left another note again, and it said the same thing.” Keep reading »
