Spoiler alert! This post contains spoilers about the movie “Spring Breakers.”
When I heard that Selena Gomez had been cast in a Harmony Korine movie, my brain kind of exploded. Korine is known for his dark, sexualized films (like “Kids,” which made Chloe Sevigny a star), while Gomez is a Disneyfied, baby-faced princess who until recently was dating Justin Bieber. The trailer and promo pics for “Spring Breakers” showed Gomez and her castmates – “High School Musical” alum Vanessa Hudgens, “Pretty Little Liars” star Ashley Benson, and the director’s wife Rachel Korine – wearing bikinis and little else as they drank, smoked, got arrested, and did drugs. Was this movie going to be Gomez’s “Can’t Be Tamed“/”I’m a Slave 4 U” moment?
Not quite. Keep reading »
I’d like to officially say that I’m not responsible for any apoplectic fits you might fall into after watching this video of James Franco — clad in Kenny Powers-esque braids — lip-syncing to Selena Gomez’s “I Love You Like A Love Song.” It seems Mr. Franco, of whom I have a documented intense hatre, is making a new film with Gomez and crappy ’90s agent provocateur Harmony Korine called “Spring Breakers.” So yeah, I’m sure this is going to turn out great. Indie filmmaker Harmony Korine (“Kids”) created an “eccentric” ad for the Native American-inspired clothing done by the Proenza Schouler fashion label. And by eccentric we mean either racist, eerie, or downright bat-s**t crazy. Watch the video, entitled ‘Snowballs’, and take your pick. Keep reading »
You certainly don’t hire writer/director/auteur Harmony Korine to do “normal” stuff. In fact, Korine probably hasn’t been acquainted with “normal” for quite some time. So it’s no surprise that his new short film “Snowballs,” made for Proenza Schouler’s Spring 2012 collection, is pretty batcrackers. While there’s nothing overtly NSFW about it, it is a touch creepy and pervy, with two models playing mute, costumed “trouble twins” who encounter a rather disturbing old man character with “magic” fingers. It’ll probably make you feel icky inside.
