It’s February already? Fashion weeks are fast approaching, that’s for sure, and New York is the first up as always, with shows beginning on Thursday. Regretfully, one brand us Manhattanites don’t usually hear much from is Miu Miu, which shows in Paris. This year, though, things are different. How different, you ask? Well, we still won’t be seeing the collection strutted down the runway, but the brand is launching a (limited edition!) line of 46 unique handmade bags of 17 different material combinations using 12 different processing techniques, all to be unveiled in the big four fashion capitals (London, Milan, Paris, and NYC) during each of their fashion weeks. I know for a fact that a grand total of zero of these bags will eventually be mine, but my god, aren’t they glorious? Check out the hypnotizing gif of all 16 New York bags, courtesy of Miu Miu, after the jump. [Fashionista] Keep reading »

How To Choose The Perfect Purse

A purse is far more than a simple accessory. It is a practical carrying case, a way to express your sense of style, something to play with during awkward moments, and even a weapon in times of trouble. In fact, if I were going to write a post called How To Choose The Perfect Man, it would probably be half this long because that subject is not nearly as important. The thing about a purse is that you carry it every day, so it has to be comfortable, versatile, aesthetically pleasing, and good quality enough to endure rough commutes, chronic overstuffing, and harrowing public bathroom trips. Shopping for the right handbag can be a daunting task. Here are the most important variable to consider when you’re in the market for a new purse… Keep reading »

There’s A 9/11 Handbag

A purse to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks doesn’t sound like it should be right. But hear me out on this. Handbag designers Jen and Chris Mascali lost their father, Staten Island firefighter Joe Mascali, on 9/11 and they are donating the wholesale portion of proceeds from these handbags to the 9/11 Memorial Fund. It’s a slick red leather tote with fringe detailing, which includes a flame printed with the words “Each life is a miracle that changes the world and leaves it a better place than it was before.” It’s chic, tasteful and doesn’t, in my opinion, egregiously capitalize on a horrific event. Still, the idea of selling 9/11-themed products unnerves me and I worry about what other products are coming down the pike. Do you think 9/11-themed products are all tasteless or are you OK with them if the money goes to charity? [Refinery 29] Keep reading »

Nicole Richie Launches House Of Harlow 1960 Handbags

Proving that she’ll take her very successful House of Harlow 1960 brand as far as demand will allow, Nicole Richie has added a collection of handbags to her fashion and accessories brand. The handbag line, which includes everything from crocodile clutches to large leather bags, has the bohemian vibe Nicole is known for. The concept behind the collection was to contrast luxury with casual, using young calf hair and relaxed vintage leathers. But skins aren’t the only focus–great attention was also paid to the hardware. Gold and black studs adorn the larger bags, and jaguar heads close clutches. The line is slated to arrive in stores mid-July, and seems to have something for every woman, a goal Nicole said she had in mind while designing. Prices will range from $150 to $625. How The “It-Bag” Is Made

“The It Bag is a totally marketed bulls**t crap. You make a bag, you put all the components in it that you think could work, you send it out to a couple of celebrities, you get the paparazzi to shoot just when they walk out of their house. You sell that to the cheap tabloids, and you say in a magazine that there’s a waiting list. And you run an ad campaign at the same time. I don’t believe that’s how you make something that’s lasting — that becomes iconic as a design.”

– Tomas Maier, creative director of Bottega Veneta, explains to the New Yorker how designers create a buzz for their handbags. [Racked] Keep reading »

Handbag Or Weapon?

This piece by Dafne Balatsos looks more like a Super Mario Brothers weapon or medieval torture device than a handbag. For real—you could do some serious damage with this guy. And we’d bet TSA wouldn’t let you near a plane with it. [Trend Hunter] Keep reading »

Trend Report: Is The Fanny Pack Making A Comeback (Again)?

One of fashion’s most despised accessories: the fanny pack. The purse-alternative accessory seems to come and go, sometimes ironically, sometimes in seriousness. It’s been a while since we spotted one, but today we came across a Zambos & Siega python print version as well as a Rebecca Minkoff studded model. These pouches seem to add an edge to the style, making the look a bit more luxe, rocker-esque, and bad-ass. Think we can expect to see the fanny pack return as a winter trend? Would you be ready to saddle up with one? [Shopbop, Kitson] Keep reading »

Handbag Confessions: What Are You Hiding In There?

I didn’t realize that I was exhibiting strange purse behavior until a friend asked me for a piece of gum and when I reached into my my black, leather bucket bag, my hand emerged full of coat buttons. She looked at me like she smelled doo-doo. Yeah. For some reason, I always have all the buttons that have fallen off my coats looming around in there. I don’t sew them back on (I don’t even know how to), I don’t throw them away. They just remain forever and always in my purse. I even transfer them when I change purses. I have no idea why. Also, I make crazy person notes to myself on receipts and keep them in my wallet. They are barely legible so I don’t even know why I bother. I can’t be the only one with weird crap in my purse. I asked Frisky staffers what they were hiding in their handbags. How about you? Fess up. What have you got in there? Keep reading »

Let’s Hope Sofia Coppola’s New Movie Isn’t As Boring As Her Louis Vuitton Line

Sofia Coppola‘s new film, “Somewhere,” is set to debut at the Venice Film Festival next week (sorry if you weren’t invited—you’ll have to wait for the December release date). We’re itching to see it because, no matter the story line, Sofia’s work is usually a visual playground of nostalgic places, saccharine candy colors, and compelling landscapes. We’re surprised, however, to see a new example from her decidedly un-creative work with Louis Vuitton. Keep reading »

The Reason Why Snooki Has Fancier Purses Than You

Snooki may have gotten punched in the face by a gym teacher from Queens, but being a D-list celebrity is not all rough on our girl. Apparently, she gets so many designer purses sent to her for free even Posh Spice is getting jealous. Style writer Simon Doonan warns us something nefarious is afoot, though. “Allegedly, the anxious folks at these various luxury houses are all aggressively gifting our gal Snookums with free bags. No surprise, right?” Doonan wrote. “But here’s the shocker: They are not sending her their own bags. They are sending her each other’s bags! Competitors’ bags! Call it what you will — ‘preemptive product placement’? ‘unbranding’? — either way, it’s brilliant, and it makes total sense.” I guess nothing warms a cold fashionista heart more than seeing a girl who just got arrested for public drunkenness during the daytime carry the competition’s wares on her arm as she trots out of the slammer. Still, that is so mean. [New York Observer] Keep reading »
