Makeup Bag: 9 Products To Put The Shine Back In (Or Prevent) Parched Summer Strands

We get the point — as good as the sun may feel (and it does), it’s not actually good for you. Now that the breaking news is out, let’s talk specifics. The sun’s rays aren’t only harmful to your skin; they also wreak havoc on your hair. Days spent lazing at the beach, by the pool, or even just strolling street-side in the city zaps the moisture and color (if you have it) out of strands, leaving you not with the loose Gisele ringlets of our collective dreams but rather a stripped, lifeless, crackling crowning accessory. Sea salt and chlorine also happen to be mane enemies, so if you’re not caring for your hair after partaking in seasonal festivities, then you definitely won’t like what you have to deal with come September. With maintenance in mind, here are my nine picks for products, both pre- and post-emptive, that will help your hair keep its cool.

If your hair is at all dry or lackluster, you need to check out Aveda’s Dry Remedy shampoo, conditioner and hair mask. Now. It is, I kid you not, the best haircare combo I’ve ever experienced in my life. (And given that part of my job involves testing out beauty products, this is no small statement.) The line is a replacement for Aveda’s now-discontinued Sap Moss set, which certainly hydrated hair, but was actually thick and creamy to the point of feeling a little oily. With Dry Remedy, they’ve worked out those kinks and the result is a rich, all-natural line that leaves no heavy icky residue to deal with later. I did balk a bit at the high price initially — about $80 for all three bottles — but I can honestly say that my hair was noticeably softer, shinier and more lovely-smelling after a single use. If you’re looking to switch up your shampoo, this is it. [shampoo: $24; conditioner: $24; hair mask: $26, Aveda] Keep reading »

We’ve been pretty fall fashion crazy around here lately, and while nothing beats slipping into some thick wool tights and soft, chubby cardigans, it’s also the time of year when it might be a good idea to switch up your beauty regimen a smidge, too. A few ideas, after the jump! Keep reading »
