Love It Or Hate It: Jessica Alba’s Blunt Cut

SPlash News

Last night at the People’s Choice Awards Jessica Alba unveiled a new hair look—a super-blunt, shoulder-length cut. What do you think? (I actually didn’t even recognize her at first!) For those of you in the “I love” category, here’s what you ask your stylist for (bring in a photo of Jess, too): No layers—well, no choppy or short layers. You do, technically, want very long (think: a half-inch to an inch shorter than your actual hair), non-chunky layers. This will get rid of some of the weight of your hair and add movement at the ends. I love the length Jessica chose, as it highlights the bluntness and is still long enough not to feel to bob-ish. To get her style: Jessica’s hair is pretty wavy to begin with so a lot of what you are seeing is natural wave. For the rest of us, blow-dry hair paying special attention to the roots—give them a thorough blast of air with your head flipped over to create volume at the roots. Then, to create wave, use a medium or a slightly larger barreled curling iron, wrap sections of hair around it leaving the bottom two inches free. Using a teeny tiny amount of styling creme, rake your fingers to gently separate the curl.

Hair Model Citizen: Jessica Simpson Just Stepped Out Of The Salon

Jessica Simpson

Well, look whose hair is all shiny and new! Jessica Simpson, caught by the paparazzi outside of her BFF and main hair guy Ken Paves’ salon yesterday looking hot, blond and sneaking a satisfied little smirk. All we ever read about Jessica are 84989203123-word paragraphs about how she’s too fat/curvy/skinny/clingy, and we can’t take the negativity anymore. She’s our Hair Model Citizen of the day—because is there a better hair moment than that first, confident stride out of the hair salon? If you’re wanting that just-from-the-salon mood boost, call your stylist. But if you’re just interested in the actual Cinderella hair style she’s rocking, here’s what you do: blow-dry, create a deep side part, sweep to the side, and coat ends with a dab of styling cream. Now, get out your trusty medium-barrel curling iron to create individual curls, then use your fingers to gently separate them so they look piece-y. [Beverly Hills, 1/5/10]

Willow Smith & Other Celeb Kids’ Hairstyles

Celebrity Kids' Hairstyles

Some folks were horrified when the footage from the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony showed Willow Smith, daughter of Will and Jada Smith, wearing what was deemed a too-adult hairstyle. Half of Willow’s head was shaved in a style similar to Cassie‘s buzz cut that had the blogosphere whirling last year. The controversy, however, was unnecessary. How else is Willow supposed to make a name for herself when her father is a huge superstar and her brother Jaden Smith is already following in his dad’s footsteps? Also, if she were a boy, people probably wouldn’t have been so upset. Even her stylist, Marcia Hamilton, doesn’t understand all the hoopla. Here’s what she told Essence.com:

“Willow’s cut was a decision made between her and Jada, and I executed their vision,” says Hamilton. “Willow’s a fierce little girl with energy, imagination and spunk. We wanted to give her a look that represented all of those things, and was easy to care for. Once I started cutting, Willow actually requested the clippers! Look, it’s 2010. Can’t our little girls move into the future without ruffling feathers? The look is fun, empowering, anti-relaxer and anti-weave. More women need to steer their little girls in this direction. If your child is a forward-thinker, you should guide her instead of smothering her.”

Celeb kids seem to have the luxury of doing some major experimenting with their hair at an early age. See which ones go the edgy route and which choose to stay classically adorable.

Beauty Test Drive: Aveda Dry Remedy For Winter Hair

Aveda Dry Remedy haircare line

If your hair is at all dry or lackluster, you need to check out Aveda’s Dry Remedy shampoo, conditioner and hair mask. Now. It is, I kid you not, the best haircare combo I’ve ever experienced in my life. (And given that part of my job involves testing out beauty products, this is no small statement.) The line is a replacement for Aveda’s now-discontinued Sap Moss set, which certainly hydrated hair, but was actually thick and creamy to the point of feeling a little oily. With Dry Remedy, they’ve worked out those kinks and the result is a rich, all-natural line that leaves no heavy icky residue to deal with later. I did balk a bit at the high price initially—about $80 for all three bottles—but I can honestly say that my hair was noticeably softer, shinier and more lovely-smelling after a single use. If you’re looking to switch up your shampoo, this is it. [shampoo: $24; conditioner: $24; hair mask: $26, Aveda]

How To Get The Snooki “Pouf”

Snookie

We’re obsessed with Snooki from MTV’s “Jersey Shore” for innumerable reasons, including her signature hair ‘do. Called “the pouf,” Snooki’s been rocking the look since she was 16 years old. Now she’s explaining how to get your very own (FYI, it takes her an hour and a half to do, but she isn’t the most low-maintenance girl going, so grain of salt): “When I get out of the shower and my hair is wet, I can scrunch it up and put the clip in and it stays forever, just because I have thick hair and it’s naturally straight. If people don’t have hair like mine, I suggest teasing it a lot and then just put hair spray in (product plug: she uses Paul Mitchell hair spray) and a clip. It should stay.” There you go, kids. Steal This Super Easy, Casual Hairdo

Diane Kruger

So, we all have those days—the days where your hair is slightly greaseball, a little bedhead-y and you just don’t want to deal. (And if I had to guess, a few of those downtime-filled days are coming up for everyone? Hopefully.) Instead of just throwing up your hair into a tight ponytail, where it’s pretty obvious you haven’t seen a bottle of shampoo in a day or two, utilize the magical hiding powers of the high bun, like Diane Kruger, above. Loving her casual cool ‘do—and loving even more that it’s a snap to do it yourself. Here’s how…

Sarah Palin Gets A Hair Makeover

Sarah Palin Hair Makeover

While millions spent their time discussing Sarah Palin‘s exorbitant wardrobe “improvements” back during the election, one blogger recently got all Photoshop happy and decided to give her hair a bit of a makeover instead. The choice of models is mostly limited to the political realm, including Hillary Clinton, Arianna Huffington, Nancy Pelosi, Dianne Feinstein, and Katie Couric with Barbra Streisand thrown in for good measure. While none of these ladies are exactly hair mavens like Jennifer Aniston or Katie Holmes, they’re all brand-new ‘dos for Sarah. More after the jump. [Examiner]

Beauty Test Drive: Frederic Fekkai Brilliant Glossing Cream

Frederic Fekkai hair gloss

Winter does horrible things to our hair, so we splurged on some Frederic Fekkai Brilliant Glossing Cream in the hopes that the gods of hair care would favor us with good results if we spent $27. Wishful thinking. While the stuff does, in fact, tame some of the fly-aways and add a bit of shine, it’s a tad more slick and goopy than we’d like it to be, often looking more icky-oily than pretty-shiny. Defeated with an almost-full tube of not-so-Brilliant Glossing Cream in hand, we decided to do the unthinkable and try the drugstore version, instead.

Hair Model Citizen: The 10 Best Short Hair Moments Of The Decade

Nicole Ritchie

The years between 2000 and 2010 have seen many a super-chic haircut. The following are simply the best of the best Hair Model Citizens.

To lead it off: Nicole Richie. Back in 2005, before the two children and the serious rocker boyfriend, before this ‘do really caught on (and I"ll get to that little fact in a bit), Ms. Richie rocked one gorgeous (and glamorous) bob. Not that I’m saying her hair isn’t just as pretty these days; it’s just that this cut was seriously memorable. And chic.

Essence’s Makeover Tool Not So Magical For Natural Women

Essence Makeover Magic Tool

I was really excited when I learned Essence.com had launched a makeover tool, “Makeover Magic,” because I thought it would give me some options for styling my locks. Boy, was I wrong! Not only does the tool not have hairstyles for dreadlocks, but it doesn’t feature any natural hairstyles. Most of the looks are ones black celebrities have rocked in the past or are currently sporting, but I recognize some from the pages of Essence. While I’m disappointed that Essence.com chose to ignore a large segment of its demographic with this new tool, I can’t say I’m surprised. The magazine very rarely features photos of natural hairstyles, especially locks, and if it does, the styles all look the same. This is probably a reflection of what’s popular in mainstream black culture, but it isn’t an excuse. Essence.com could have combed through its photo archive and used natural styles that were featured in the magazine, like it did for the “Party Coifs” section of the tool, which contains photos of models, rather than celebs.

I did try out the “Makeover Magic” tool. As you can see, I went in a completely different direction with my hair, but I have decided to stick with my locks. [Essence.com]

Pauly D’s Blow-Dry Routine Takes Longer Than Ours

Forget everything you ever knew about getting the perfect blow-out. In this video, Pauly D of MTV’s “Jersey Shore” beauty schools you in how to get the perfect guido blow-out—which includes techniques you’d probably never even fathom trying. His routine, which takes almost a half hour, starts off with a jumbo-sized lump of gel, which he explains might be “a little white, so just rub out the white.” Next comes a spray product, which Pauly explains is a moldah and a shapuh (a molder and shaper), which he applies for a full 15 seconds.

Seriously, who decided that it would look cool to make your hair stand straight on end like you stuck your finger in a light socket? [NY Daily News]

Would You Willingly Go Gray? Here’s How ...

Pixie Geldof

Most people try their hardest to mask unwanted grays, preoccupying themselves with salon visits in a desperate attempt to keep their roots a secret. But fashion trendsetters like designers Giles Deacon and Gareth Pugh sent silver foxes down their runways, and models and socialites like Kristen McMenamy and Pixie Geldof have embraced the gray look for reasons ranging from punk to empowerment (see “Why I Love My Gray Hair”). Think it looks as cool as we do? After the jump we explain how to get the look.
