Hair Model Citizen: Lily Allen’s Skunky Do

Splash News

We’re not saying whether or not we’re wild about Lily Allen‘s new ‘do (we’ll leave that up to you), but she is definitely a Hair Model Citizen for busting out something, well, interesting. So she’s got the rock star platinum thing going on: really choppy, thick bangs and plenty of chunks of black. Now the only way to get this look—if you’re interested, that is—is to be prepared to do some serious damage to your hair. You’d have to bleach the whole thing and then separately dye the black, unless you already have black hair and you could just not dye a few strands. On second thought, we’d recommend leaving this look to Lily Allen. [Manchester, 11/17/09]

Hair Model Citizen: Sophia Loren Knows What Works

Sophia Loren Then & Now

Film and beauty icon Sophia Loren won’t go changin’: She’s currently promoting a new film, “Nine,” and stepped out looking fabulous today. We were most struck that despite the fact that she has not changed her hairstyle in a few decades, it’s still totally working out for her. Huh. To get the look, you’ll need to find a hairdresser who still knows what a “curl and set” means. (Good luck with that one.) Basically, it’s the practice of rolling up your entire head of hair in curlers and either sitting under a huge industrial-sized hairdryer or just sleeping in them (ouch!). We suspect it involves a lot of hairspray, too. Sounds like a job for L’Oreal Elnett! [NYC, 11/16/09]

Hair Model Citizen: Dakota Fanning’s Midi-Bob

Dakota Fanning

In Hollywood, a bob is a bob is a bob, which is why Dakota Fanning‘s ‘do in the new Teen Vogue gives us pause. Sure, we feel a little weird fawning over a teenager’s haircut, but this is a look that would work for any age. The key lies in the layers. There are none, see? It’s as if your typical blunt bob was grown out with just a hint of flip at the ends, and it looks sophisticated without being too precious. To get the look, print this pic out and take it to your hairstylist. Or just ask them to keep it mid-length, go easy on the layers, and blow it all out. For DIY-ers, apply Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum to damp hair. This cuts down on drying time, smooths, conditions and shines. [Teen Vogue]

Hair Model Citizen: Doesn’t Your Cat Deserve A Wig Today?

Electric Blue Kitty Wig

This sweet puss is a Hair Model Citizen because she fearlessly dares to go where no cats that we know of have gone before. In fact, last time we tried to put a wig on our friend’s cat, let’s just say the outcome was anything but pretty. To get the look, you’ll need to click on over and order up this fetching shade of electric blue for a mere $50. Or, if you simply enjoy looking at photographs of cats wearing wigs (trust us, it’s much safer this way), you can purchase the new book based on this craze that’s sweeping the nation, called Glamourpuss: The Enchanting World Of Kitty Wigs. It’ll pretty much tell you everything you need to know. [Kitty Wigs]

Hair Model Citizen: Cover Girl Perfection

Charlize Theron

Christ on a cracker, we don’t think we’ve seen more perfect hair ever. Some paparazzi yelled, “Hey Charlize, over here!” at the recent Hollywood Film Festival Awards, she snapped her head back, and boom, somebody could put this pic on a magazine cover. To get this look, you’ll need some seriously good genes, a killer set of baby blond highlights, and a conditioning treatment to make it look extra glossy and silky. Ask the colorist to use a balayage technique (that’s when they paint the highlights in) to get it looking extra natural and sun-kissed. If you’re just interested in the style, blow-dry, create an extra-deep side part, sweep to the side, and coat ends with just a dab of L’Oreal Studio Line Curl Smoothing Cream. Use a small-barrel curling iron to create individual curls, then use your fingers to separate them so they look wavy. God help you. [L.A., 10/26/09]

Hair Model Citizen: Chic Hat Head

Monet Mazur

Actress Monet Mazur is today’s hair model citizen and here is why: There will be days, my loves, when your trusty tresses will, quite honestly, look like s**t. I know, I know, it’s so unfathomable, but true. Whether you have paparazzi following you around while you’re shopping or you’re simply afraid of running into a boyfriend, a bad hair day calls for a smart hat that helps you take back some control in an unpredictable world. To get the look: sweep hair back from your face; place beneath all-encompassing cap. Shew, that was a close one. [London, 10/22/09]

Hair Model Citizen: Not Bad For A Pussycat Doll

Kim Wyatt

I never thought I’d actually say this about a member of The Pussycat Dolls, but Kim Wyatt’s hair is looking kind of rad. The party in the front, business in back show is really working out for her. To get the look, you need some seriously strong hold and having bleached-to-death hair lends the perfect texture. Work a healthy dose of TIGI Catwalk Extra Strong Mousse into your hair, tease the front up to the heavens and comb the sides back. [Manchester, 10/19/09]

Hair Model Citizen: Where’s Ken Paves Now Beyotch?

Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson is known for her talent golden locks. Her hairstylist, Ken Paves, is known for his talent ability to manipulate said golden locks into perfect, gleaming platinum curls and bows and whistles via irons and curlers and extensions and lots of hairspray. Today, Simpson, seen checking out of the Ritz-Carlton in Manhattan, looks like she got a much-needed makeunder or something. Welcome to a world where very tan, bleached-out men don’t follow you around with a hairbrush, darling! It’s so freeing, no? To get the look, do nothing. Don’t even brush your hair. Add sunnies. Viola! [NYC, 10/14/09]

Hair Model Citizen: Sweet As Apple Pie

America Ferrera

“Ugly Betty” star America Ferrera was having an exceptionally good hair day at the “Save the Children” benefit last night in Soho, New York City. She skipped the way messy bedhead trend in favor of something a little more formal, but still managed to look cute and age-appropriate. To get the look: Blow-dry hair; separate the top layer on the crown; work in a bit of volumizer, like Matrix Amplify Full Body Texturizer; and use a rat-tailed comb to create some lift. Tie with a hair band—it doesn’t have to look perfect—then use a flat-iron to make the ends look silky smooth like they do here, which is a nice contrast to the more textured crown. Hairspray optional.

Hair Model Citizen: Elvis Presley’s Hair Scraps

Elvis Hair

I may have missed the Elvis craze, but ever since I was treated to a private tour of Graceland, I’ve been intrigued by the King. Obviously, intrigued is a far cry from obsessed, and you’d have to be to purchase this “large quantity of hair” for sale by Leslie Hindman Auctioneers of Chicago later this month. Apparently, this model citizen was shaved off his highness’s head when he was drafted into the U.S. Army and shed his famous locks for a military issue crew cut. This pile of seemingly innocuous hair is estimated to be worth somewhere between $8,000 and $12,000. For serious. To get the look, firmly press electric shaver to head and keep a broom close by. Hair Model Citizen: Dita Gives Good Head

Dita Von Teese

Nobody works glamorous, 1940s pinup-girl style like the one and only Dita Von Teese. She gets an honorable citation today for denouncing the modern trend of sloppy ‘dos by sticking with a classic formula that looks good on her every time. Here’s how you can recreate the look: Treat slightly damp, towel-dried hair to a dose of Redken Crystal Curls Defining Shine Gel. Divide hair into multiple sections (about two inches each), and roll into large curlers, securing with bobby pins. Either go to sleep (if you’re doing this overnight) or use a blowdryer to completely dry your hair. Remove curlers, part to one side, and touch up with hairspray for hold and to smooth flyaways. Hey, we didn’t say looking this good was easy. [Madrid, 10/5/09]

Hair Model Citizen: Maybe She Sold Her Soul To The Devil

Lily Cole

We seriously can’t wait for “The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus” to come out, but for now, we’ll settle for its star, Model Citizen Lily Cole’s outstanding hairdo. She could’ve gone for a perfectly polished blow-dry (like the ones we’re beginning to see on the red carpet again), but we like this toned-down version. To get the look, blow-dry until it’s almost there but the ends are ever so slightly damp. Work a cream stylant like John Frieda Straight Fixation Smoothing Creme into the ends and twist large sections (about four total) around with your fingers. Air-dry and traipse off to your film premiere or, ah, work. [Paris, 9/30/09]

Hair Model Citizen: Amy Winehouse Puss

Cat Hair Model

This gorgeous Siamese cat deserves an honorable mention for pulling off Amy Winehouse‘s signature beehive with elegant aplomb. To get the look, you’ll need a rat tail comb and multiple doses of hairspray. This one should do the trick. [Pets Rock 2010]

Hair Model Citizen: Little Miss Perfect

Sarah Paxton

Sarah Paxton is filming “The Beautiful Life” and she is giving me a serious case of nostalgia in terms of remembering that evil blond cheerleader that totally ruined my life in high school. (OK, we didn’t have sports and it was art school and everyone was really nice.) But! This hair is, like, traditional pretty, pretty princess hair that’s modern because it’s got texture and it’s just slightly messy. To copy this bitch’s perfect hair (I mean the girl, not the dog), apply Garnier Fructis Style Soft Curl Cream to slightly damp hair, twist large sections with your fingers, and allow to air dry. To get a perfectly mussed look, rub a balloon on your head for a little extra static. Seriously. It works. [NYC, 9/23/09]

This sculptural beehive was spotted at Danielle Scutt’s showing at London Fashion Week. And while we fully salute this Hair Model Citizen, we can’t say this is a runway trend we’ll be rocking anytime soon. [London, 9/21/09]

Hair Model Citizen: Kelly Rowland

Kelly Rowland

We award Kelly Rowland (seen here in the tents at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week) the Hair Model Citizen Award for keeping it nice and simple by sporting soft, natural-looking (though we know that always takes work) hair. To get a similar look, apply Curls’ Curl Gel-les’c to wet hair, create a thick braid, allow to air dry and take it out. [New York, 9/18/09]
