Hair Dos: 13 Pretty, Quirky & Cool Bobby Pins You’ll Want To Show Off

Last week, I urged you to reconsider the humble bobby pin as a hair doodad that should be exposed instead of hidden. But sometimes any ol’ bobby pin won’t do — there are occasions when a fun, fancy or funny bobby pin is in order. Here are 13 special bobby pins (sold in packs, pairs, or individually) to add to your collection. Just try hard not to lose these…

Get The Look: Chiara De Blasio’s Headband!

Yesterday, New York City elected its first Democratic Mayor in 20 years. Headed to Gracie Mansion with Mayor-elect Bill De Blasio is his amazing family — wife Chirlane McCray, son Dante and daughter Chiara. Oh, and one more thing. Chiara’s awesome array of headbands, which she has worn all campaign season. My personal favorite? This crown of roses, which Chiara wore at many events and in a De Blasio campaign ad. Best of all? I think I found Chiara’s exact headband at Urban Outfitters and it’s only $20! Score. [Urban Outfitters]

No Excuses, You Need These DIY Glittery Star Pins This Holiday Season

I’ve never been the type of girl to sport hair accessories with regularity. (I tried the Blair Waldorf headband thing in high school before I realized it was more than a little bit to blame for my atrocious tension headaches, and that was the end of that.) Sure, I’ll pop a decorative bobby pin in there once in a while for some oomph if I’m looking especially haggard, but otherwise I take my hair plain with a ponytail holder. But against my better rationality, I cannot escape my magpie nature: when I spotted the glistening gold stars tucked into models’ hair at the Rodarte Autumn/Winter show (at left), it was love at first sight. Seriously. Screw men, I want stars in my hair. Keep reading »

I feel strangely ambivalent in regards to hair accessories. I love the look of them — there’s nothing cuter than a well-placed decorative clip or a contrasting headband accenting a ’60s-style bouffant … on someone else. I own a variety of hair accessories, which I often put on in the morning and end up pulling out right before I leave the house, because as a person with a great amount of nervous energy and an even greater amount of discontentment with my appearance (I’m so much fun), I just can’t seem to keep anything in my hair for longer than an hour or two. That being said, I have some kind of magnetic attraction to floral hair accessories that leads me to buy them and spend far more time debating wearing them and preening in front of the mirror wearing them than actually, you know, wearing them. Seeing as I’m a decidedly un-floral person in most other aspects, it must be the San Franciscan in me that’s drawn to a little flower perched atop a bobby pin — I just can’t help myself. I’m particularly obsessed with the perfect chiffon peonies that J. Crew sells in a million gorgeous colors (in stores only), but how easy would these be to DIY? I’ve never DAM (Done Anything Myself) because I am exceedingly untrustworthy with a hot glue gun, but this is one craft I think I could pull off without a hitch. Would you wear them? Would you wear them all day? If so, you are a far stronger person than I.
