More Thoughts On Jean-Paul Goude, The Black Jezebel Stereotype & That Racist Kim Kardashian Photoshoot

Yesterday, I did a brief post on the racism displayed in Kim Kardashian’s much talked about Paper magazine cover and photoshoot. I focused on Kardashian’s demotion from “Whiteness” in society because of her relationships with Black men; relationships that have essentially cast her into the realm of “Blackness” where her body is readily exploited and hypersexualized, in ways eerily similar to the vulgar treatment Black female bodies receive in the United States.

Many responded by claiming that Kim Kardashian is Middle Eastern and not White. The difference between ethnicity and race should always be considered when discussing matters of racism. Per the U.S. Department of Justice:

“White people” are defined as “people having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa.”

Lorde’s Style Icons Are David Bowie & Grace Jones, Of Course

“The kind of clothes that I’ve found I like to wear over the past year and six months have all been things that make me feel powerful and strong. I wear a lot of pants. I wear a lot of long, structured dresses.”

In a chat with Vogue for their March 2014 issue, Lorde shared some of her fashion philosophies. The singer looks up to people “who have such a sense of themselves” within their style, like Grace Jones and David Bowie. Lorde is about the most self-actualized high schooler I know of, and that certainly comes across in her sartorial choices. She’s mentioned that her favorite designers are Comme des Garcons, Miu Miu, Moschino and Simone Rocha, but the singer also has a dog named Jimmy Choo — another favorite brand perhaps? In the past, she’s explained to Vogue how important clothes are to her musicality: Keep reading »

You can’t call Grace Jones’ performance at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebration anything less than spectacular. She sang “Slave to the Rhythm” while hula-hooping. Like, she kept the hoop up the entire time. Look at her legs! I need to remind you all that she’s 64 years old. I hope I can still pull off a latex leotard and headdress at that age. New thing to aspire to. I bow down to you, Grace. [WOW]

Jake Gyllenhaal Channels Grace Jones In Tighty-Whities

Though this photo, of a briefs-donning Jake Gyllenhaal mimicking Grace Jones’ iconic Island Life album cover, has TMZ’s logo on it, it’s nowhere to be found on the site itself. Who leaked it, who took it, and when it was taken are a mystery, but I think we are all grateful it happened and thankful for whoever is responsible. [via ONTD] Keep reading »

Yes, That’s Grace Jones And Pee-wee Herman Singing Christmas Carols

It should come as no surprise that Grace Jones and Pee-wee Herman used to hang out. After all, they’re two of the strangest characters of the ’80s, so sure. Here, an uncharacteristically ebullient Grace sings “Little Drummer Boy” to Pee-wee, Chairy, Terry and the rest of the “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” gang. [YouTube] Keep reading »

Quotable: Grace Jones Shuts Lady Gaga Down!

“I really don’t think of [Lady Gaga] at all. I go about my business … Yes, she did, but I said no. I’d just prefer to work with someone who is more original and someone who is not copying me, actually … Well, you know, I’ve seen some things she’s worn that I’ve worn, and that does kind of piss me off.”

Grace Jones reveals in an interview with The Guardian that she’s not a fan of Gaga and has even shut down Gaga’s collaboration attempt. [Access Hollywood via Dlisted]
