Katy, Adele, Bruno, Nicki, Gotye, oh my!

Ready for a mega musical flashback in mashup form? DJ Earworm combined all of the biggest hits of 2012 into one 4-minute song called “The United State Of Pop,” and the result is surprisingly–or perhaps predictably?–catchy. A quick word of caution: if your end-of-the-year goal was to finally get the chorus of “Somebody That I Used To Know” out of your head, well, you might want to skip this video. • Last night, the nominees for the 2013 Grammy Awards were announced! Frank Ocean, fun., Taylor Swift, Kelly Clarkson, Gotye, Miguel, and Jay Z and Kanye West are all up for lots of awards. Can we all collectively agree that they should just hand Carly Rae Jepsen the song of the year award for “Call Me Maybe” and not waste anyone’s time with the other noms? [SPIN]

It's A Love/Hate Thing

You hate it, but you also can’t help but sing along to it. That pretty much sums up how we’re feeling about Gotye’s “Somebody That You Used To Know,” too. [YouTube]

The Gotye/Notorious B.I.G. Mash Up You’ve Been Waiting For

New York DJ Scott Melker wanted to make a remix of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” that would stand out, so he decided to mash the softspoken Australian artist with the late Brooklyn rapper Notorious B.I.G. “Everyone has remixed Gotye. But nobody has done it like this,” says Scott on his blog. “‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ is a song about being pissed off at a woman. [B.I.G.'s] ‘Dead Wrong’ is similar, but far more aggressive. I think Gotye needs to be more aggressive. I … helped him out.”

My boyfriend and I have been listening to Gotye’s song “Somebody That I Used To Know” on repeat for the past week, and so has everyone else, judging by my friends’ Spotify playlists and the video’s skyrocketing view count (about 50 million of those hits are from me, but still). It’s a great song, and totally worthy of a little obsessiveness, but my god, I need to diversify my musical choices before auditory exhaustion sets in. So can we talk about music for a minute? What song(s) are you obsessing over? Any new artists you’re excited about? Help me out of my Gotye rut! [Weirdly enough, Winona wrote this post without knowing that Julie had also just discovered Gotye and written up his album as a Crave. They are on the same music cycle! -- Editor]

Good For Gotye

As some of you may know, I used to DJ a ton, and music is still a HUGE part of my life. That’s why I LOVE  Spotify, and spend all day listening to it when I’m writing the stories and making the Internet. I’ve made a bunch of great mixes on there — like seriously great mixes — that you guys should subscribe to and check out! It’s also a great place to discover new (and sometimes old) music you might have mixed. (My user name is julie.gerstein). One artist I missed last year is Gotye, an Australian musician whose jams may veer a little on the easy-listening side of things, but whose cutting lyrics more than make up for the less-than-tough-guy jams. I’ve been obsessively listening to “Somebody That I Used to Know,” which also features vocalist Kimbra, and is about a breakup gone bad. “Told myself that you were right for me, but felt so lonely in your company,” he sings. The rest of the record is kinda whatever — actually, really whatever, but dang, that song is so good. [$9.99, Amazon]
