Five Dating Tips From Dorothy Zbornak

I used to dog sit for two of the cutest pups in the whole world.Their owners gave me strict instructions to always leave the TV on, set to Lifetime, whenever I left them alone. Without fail, when I’d come back, I’d find the dogs lying on the rug together, holding paws and watching the “Golden Girls.” Aww! Those dogs clearly learned a thing or two about how to love each other, and I bet Bea Arthur, as Dorothy Zbornak, taught them a lesson or two. She was always going out with some Tom, Dick (Van Dyke), or Dr. Harry — her neighbor/star of “Empty Nest.” Here are five things we learned from Dorothy’s dating debacles. Keep reading »

    Bea Arthur, Television’s Ballsiest Broad

Bea Arthur passed away over the weekend at the age of 86. Sadness. Everything I needed to know about scathing wit I learned from Dorothy Zbornak, who was my constant companion on TV throughout kidhood. “The Golden Girls” were funny and fierce, not letting age get in the way of a good time. The ladies sipped frozen drinks and laughed at all the curveballs life threw at them a decade before Carrie & Co. sexed up the city. After the jump, a look back at our favorite Bea Arthur moments. The Daily Hotness: Estelle Getty

Estelle Getty, best known for playing Sophia on The Golden Girls passed away this morning at 84. Since Estelle was practically the patron saint of sassiness, we are extremely sad.

Even though she played perhaps the most memorable character on the show, Estelle had to audition three times before getting the part for which she won two Emmys. At 60, they thought she didn’t look old enough — and she technically wasn’t old enough, as she was a year younger than her on-screen daughter Bea Arthur. After the jump, a video of Sophia’s best one-liners from season one of The Golden Girls. [NPR]

Quote Of The Day: Rue McClanahan Admires Blanche

“Blanche is a role model. She’s free. She follows her own rules and moves to her own drummer. She had a wonderful, optimistic outlook. She was sort of like Scarlett O’ Hara, saying, ‘Oh, well, tomorrow is another day.’” — Rue McClanahan on The Golden Girls‘ Blanche Devereaux Keep reading »
