A celebration of outstanding LGBT moments in pop culture, the GLAAD Media Awards bring together gay icons, allies and out actors to celebrate the best in LGBT representation. This year’s big showstopper was Madonna, who turned up dressed in a Boy Scout outfit meant to draw attention to the Boy Scouts’ ongoing gay ban. Who else was there, and what did they wear? Toronto Blue Jays Player Yunel Escobar Suspended For Writing Anti-Gay Slur On His Face
For those of you who don’t speak Spanish, “Tu Ere Maricon” translates to “You are a faggot.” Toronto Blue Jays player Yunel Escobar made a grave error in judgement by writing this anti-gay slur on his face during a game this weekend. Escobar defended his homophobic face painting at a press conference saying: “I don’t have anything against homosexuals. I have friends that are gay … It’s just something that’s been said amongst the Latinos. It’s not something that’s meant to be offensive.” Keep reading »
GLAAD Chides “Jersey Shore” For Using The Word “Tranny.” But What About “Glee”?
MTV’s “Jersey Shore” had a bit of a situation with the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) for airing what they deemed to be “one of the most blatantly transphobic scenes aired anywhere on television in the last few years.” During this season of the show, The Situation was out at a club, chatting up a person he presumed to be a woman but turned out to be transgendered. Girl On Girl: Can Someone Tell GLAAD 50 Cent Isn’t Worth It?
Someone needs to tell the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) that 50 Cent isn’t worth the time it takes to call out his bigotry. And he certainly doesn’t deserve the effort required to launch a full-fledged campaign against him.
In case you don’t know what I’m talking about, 50 Cent took to Twitter last week and, in an angry tirade against Perez Hilton, dissed the entire LGBT crowd. He wrote: “Perez Hilton called me douchebag so I had my homie shoot up a gay wedding. wasnt his but still made me feel better. ” After this Tweet about women, he was already heading to the top of my list of “People I’d Like To Meet … And Knock Out,” and after this one, he took the #1 slot. Why Isn’t Johnny Weir “Family Friendly”?
The Stars On Ice Tour will hit rinks on April 1 and stars like Evan Lysacek and Sasha Cohen will triple-axle their way across 40 cities in the U.S. But one Olympian whom the public love love loves won’t be there: Johnny Weir. An anonymous source has told the Gay And Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) that tour sponsors like Smuckers and IMG Entertainment nixed Weir from participating because he is not “family friendly.” Keep reading »
TV Is Coming Out Like Clay Aiken
Network TV has got almost as many gay characters as Marc Jacobs’ Rolodex. Just last year, there were only seven homosexuals and bisexuals on the boob tube, but this year that number has more than doubled to 16. GLAAD is certainly happy to announce the awesome news and even single out an old foe. The sharp increase is thanks, in part, to Fox, who not only finally put one gay character on a series, they put a whopping FIVE! Still, all this good news comes with a new glass ceiling. While gay men seem to be making head way (no pun intended), there are no lesbian characters on the major networks — just bisexual women.
