Has Feminism Gone Too Far?

You know, I understand there was a time in history when the word “feminism” meant something. Women fought to win equal rights. And some 50 years later, great strides have been made. Recently, it seems like old-school feminism has returned. This time around, though, it seems like all the political action is gone, and the new feminist key activity consists of pointing out all the ways in which women are supposedly exploited, victimized, or hyper-sexualized by the media. I’m sorry, but pointing out possible instances of sexism in the mainstream media does not a political movement make. Keep reading »

Celebrity Girl Haters

I’m always skeptical of a woman who says doesn’t have girlfriends. It’s a real red flag for me – that leaves me wondering, “What’s wrong with this picture?” Is she untrustworthy? A boyfriend stealer? A narcissist? Sure – it’s fun and healthy to have guy friends (less drama for sure) – but it’s downright shady not to be able to get along with other ladies. According to a recent interview with Metro, Megan Fox thinks girls can’t be friends with one another because we all have daddy issues. When asked about the “frenemies” phenomenon she said, “Yes, girls are awful. But, in their defense, girls are awful because of the way society is set up – we’re constantly in competition for male attention. Our fathers raise us wrong and we spend the rest of our lives searching for boys to pay attention to us, which validates us. So no girl can really be your friend, because if she takes attention from you, your daddy doesn’t love you.” Watchu talkin’ ‘bout Megan? That’s some messed up stuff. I think she just proved my theory. Something’s not quite right there … but we already kind of knew that. After the jump, some other celebs that are girl haters. Gotta makes you wonder … [Celebitchy] Keep reading »

My Period Is Not A Natural Disaster, Thank You Very Much

Yesterday, as I was flipping through People, I came across an advertisement that scared me to death. What was it marketing? Feminine hygiene products, of course. Because, I mean, what could be scarier than a period?! The Always Infinity ad features a dangerous tornado-like whirlpool swirling ominously into a gigantic maxi pad. A pad that, apparently, has the power to absorb ten times its weight— “so your heavy days won’t spin you out of control.” (If you care to see the full, 3-D, moving visual, check it out here.)

Girl Scouts Want To Ban Airbrushing

Their uniform isn’t the only thing the Girl Scouts, or “Girl Guides,” as they’re called in the UK, are modernizing; their manifesto is getting updated, too. No longer so focused on sewing, cooking, and making Mother’s Day corsages out of pink tissue paper, modern-day scouts are more concerned with putting a ban on “the airbrushing of models in magazines and a crackdown on peer pressure to have sex too soon.” To create their new manifesto, Girlguiding UK, a publication devoted to all things Girl Guides/Girl Scouts, surveyed 1,000 members about the issues that concern them most. The top ten concerns of today’s Girl Scouts? Find out after the jump. [The Daily Mail] Keep reading »

Poll: We’re Having A Baby Of Indeterminate Sex!

Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale don’t want to find out the sex of their baby until Gwen goes into it’s born. Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban know their baby’s sex but aren’t sharing. Tori Spelling expressed her need to know on Jimmy Kimmel last month: “We are going to find out because I hate yellow nurseries! And then if you don’t tell people, you just get [gifts of] yellow and white stuff!” Would you want to know whether you’re having a boy or a girl?
