Was A Gift Guide For People “Of Color” Really Necessary?

Sometimes a gesture that was meant to be politically correct and progressive actually turns out to be offensive. Take, for instance, the New York Timesgift guide for people “of color.” Not only does this guide assume that blacks, Asians, and Hispanics don’t like the same things as whites, but it also assumes its target audience has the same tastes. I (and probably most Hindus) would not want a gospel cruise and can’t understand why non-white people need specific nail polish colors. And just so you know, black women don’t want to receive hair products as gifts, especially when our hair is described as “problem hair.” It’s not a problem for us, and if it is a problem for you New York Times folks, well, then that’s your problem. And we probably already know what products work on our hair, thank you very much. I know the Times‘ intentions were positive, but you can’t wrap three races and several nationalities into a neat little gift and slap a bow on the package. What they should have done was simply add the race-specific ideas to the other gift guides. Maybe white people would like their children to read about President Obama or Sonia Sotomayor too. What’s The Best Gift You Ever Gave Or Got?

With the holidays (and my birthday) coming up, I’ve been thinking a lot about gifts and what makes a good one. In my experience, the best gifts are the ones that show you know the person, rather than this year’s It item that everyone wants to get their hands on. In the spirit of giving, share the best gift you ever gave and the best one you ever got in the comments — maybe someone else’s brilliant idea will inspire one of your own… Keep reading »

Thrillist’s Top 6 Father’s Day Gifts, With Help From TV Dad Patrick Duffy!

Stumped for a gift for your dad that isn’t the latest 10-blade razor or a subscription to Men’s Journal? Have no fear! The Frisky has teamed up with Thrillist to bring you the top Father’s Day Gifts that don’t suck—and they’ve brought a surprise guest to help with our efforts to rock your old man’s world.

Your pops keeps two areas of his life a closely guarded secret: how he obtained his sass-quashing old-man strength, and what he really wants for Father’s Day. To help with the latter, we brought in Patrick Duffy, the Ultimate Dad, a title he earned by successfully raising many television children (Step By Step) and sleeping with Suzanne Somers. OK, it was implied. And on TV. But, still, rock on Patrick Duffy. Keep reading »

Frisky Chatter: Dish From The Frisky Forums

Here’s what went down on the The Frisky Forums this week — while you’re avoiding doing your laundry this weekend, stop and chime in!

  • SoCoDivka is looking for recommendations for a cheer-up giftfor her boyfriend. Amelia suggested sky-diving, something she is way too wimpy to try, so maybe one of you guys will have a better idea!
  • Elle really, really, really wants you to look at this picture of a carrot that resembles either a big hairy ass or a penis. You be the judge.
  • People are still talking about accidental anal penetration — maybe we should turn the discussion into other sexual mishaps in the bedroom?
  • If you’ve got more Mother’s Day gifts to add to the list we put together, suggest your own. We still have no idea what the hell to get our moms.
