George Huguely, UVA Lacrosse Player, Had A History Of Violence

It’s been almost two weeks since Yeardley Love, a 22-year-old UVA student and lacrosse player, was allegedly killed by her ex-boyfriend, George Huguely. (Huguely was charged with first-degree murder in her death.) As the weeks wear on, more details have emerged about Huguely’s alleged violence and partying, including whispers from his lacrosse teammates that Huguely attacked a fellow student last year. Several UVA lacrosse players told The Washington Post, under the condition of anonymity, that in February 2009 Huguely had heard a fellow teammate kissed Love and then, after “a night of partying,” Huguely attacked the teammate while the guy was sleeping. According to the players, UVA’s lacrosse coach Dom Starsia disciplined both Huguely and his teammate. However, both still played in games that week. Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: UVA Warns Against Attacks By Strangers & Crystal Renn Walks For Chanel

  • Yeardley Love, the UVA lacrosse player found dead in her apartment over a week ago, was laid to rest this weekend. Her on-again/off-again boyfriend, George Huguely, was arrested and charged with first degree murder. While he has not been convicted — though his lawyer has already said that Love’s death was “an accident,” which does imply Huguely played a role — all evidence points to the fact that Love was killed by someone she knew. So why, wonders The Sexist, is UVA responding to this tragedy by warning students against crimes committed by strangers? [The Sexist]

  • UVA lacrosse player George Huguely, who is accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend, fellow UVA lacrosse player Yeardley Love, got physically aggressive with her at a party two months ago, according to two people with knowledge of the incident. Two current and one former Unversity of North Carolina lax players allegedly separated Huguely from Love during the dispute. A member of Love’s family, speaking on the condition of anonymity, also said Love once portrayed Huguely as “aggressive” when asked about him. [Washington Post]

The Violent Past Of UVA Lacrosse Murder Suspect, George Huguely

More details have emerged about George Huguely, the University of Virginia lacrosse player accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend, Yeardley Love, who also played UVA lacrosse. Apparently the pair had broken up in recent weeks and on Sunday evening, police say Huguely entered Love’s apartment through an unlocked front door and then kicked down her locked bedroom door. Huguely admitted to police that the pair had an argument and he shook Love and slammed her head against the wall. He allegedly grabbed Love’s computer and retreated to his place, leaving his ex-girlfriend with a bruised face and a swollen eye, where she died lying face down on her bed in a pool of blood on her pillow.

Not surprisingly, police are investigating reports that Huguely had been drinking on Sunday when he allegedly killed Love. But I so very much hope that Love’s murder does not get chalked up to “a hard-partying lacrosse lunkhead drank too much and killed his girlfriend.” On the contrary, Huguely’s behavior was textbook: it is a fact acknowledged by advocates for domestic violence victims that a woman is most at risk when she tries to leave an abusive relationship. Today’s Lady News: More Details On Yeardley Love’s Death

  • Today we wrote about Yeardley Love, a 22-year-old UVA student who was found dead yesterday morning, and George Huguely, a fellow student with whom she’d been romantically involved and who was charged with first degree murder in her death. According to an affidavit filed with the search warrant, Love had been shaken and her head had been repeatedly hit against the wall. Investigators now say when Love was found by her roommate, she was laying face down in her bedroom with a pool of blood on her pillow. Police also suspect Huguely had kicked down Love’s door. Speaking to reporters this morning, Huguely’s lawyer said that Love’s death was “not intended” and “an accident.” Cuz, you know, sometimes you just accidentally kill your ex-girlfriend. [AP]
  • For some reason, UVA’s school police response after Love’s murder was to send out an email to students about stranger danger. An email from UVA Police Chief Mike Gibson warned students to avoid isolated areas, avoid walking home alone at night, and keep their doors and windows locked. Hey, maybe they’re just still busy writing that safety email about dating violence. Right?! [The Sexist]

UVA Lacrosse Player George Huguely Charged In Death Of Yeardley Love

Shock fell over the University of Virginia campus yesterday when students and faculty learned Yeardley Love, 22, a member of the lacrosse team, had been killed. Police charged George Huguely, a member of the #1-ranking men’s lacrosse team, in her death.

Police responded at 2:15 a.m. on Monday morning to a possible alcohol overdose at Love’s apartment, after her body had been found by her roommate. But police said Love had “obvious physical trauma” to her body, although it did not appear a weapon was used. Huguely, who was found at his apartment nearby, was questioned and charged with first-degree murder.

Police told reporters Love and Huguely “have had a romantic relationship” in the past, but it was unclear what their status was at the time of her death. This morning, Huguely’s lawyer, Francis Lawrence, said, “We are confident that Ms. Love’s death was not intended, but an accident with a tragic outcome.”

Love, a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, who was originally from Cockeysville, Maryland, was only weeks away from graduation. Keep reading »
