Geraldine Ferraro, the first woman from a major party ever to run for vice president, died yesterday at age 75. Ferraro was a Queens criminal prosecutor and then representative in Congress who joined Walter Mondale in a presidential run in 1984. Although the Walter-Mondale ticket proved no match for Ronald Reagan and George Bush (41), Ferraro nevertheless busted through the glass ceiling of national politics 64 years after women were acknowledged their right to vote. Quotable: Laura Bush Says The Bushes Have “A Number Of Close Friends Who Are Gay”

“In 2004 the social question that animated the campaign was gay marriage. Before the election season had unfolded, I had talked to George about not making gay marriage a significant issue. We have, I reminded him, a number of close friends who are gay or whose children are gay. But at that moment I could never have imagined what path this issue would take and where it would lead.”

In A New Memoir, Laura Bush Alleges The Bushes Were Poisoned On Germany Trip

Former First Lady Laura Bush is not known for saying anything too controversial or even interesting. But holy moly, does her forthcoming memoir, Spoken From The Heart, sound like a juicy read! According to The New York Times, Laura Bush will finally open up about the incident when she killed a high school friend in a car crash at age 17 and even defend President Bush’s handling of Hurricane Katrina. But the most interesting part of Laura Bush’s memoir, which is to be released in May, is when she alleges that she, President George W. Bush, and several members of their staff were poisoned on a trip to Germany for a G8 Summit. Yes, poisoned. That’s some really cloak-and-dagger stuff right there. Keep reading »

HIV Positive Travelers Finally Allowed To Visit The United States

For the past 22 years, the U.S has banned HIV-positive visitors from entering our illustrious and diverse country. Other progressive lands with such rules: Iraq, Saudia Arabia, China, Libya, and the Sudan. But the government has finally lifted the ban and surprisingly, it was George W. Bush who signed the bill that put the repeal into action last summer. But because HIV was still on a list of communicable diseases restricting travel, people were still being kept out of the country and their only option was to apply for a waiver that cost $545 and didn’t guarantee admission anyway. The Department of Health and Human Services made the final steps on July 2nd to officially get rid of this policy altogether.

I’m still confused—did tourists have to get blood work before coming to America? It’s not like sneeze germs pass HIV and, I mean, Americans should know better than to sleep with tourists anyway. (Just kidding!) If I was foreign and HIV positive, I would totally want to go to Graceland for Dippin’ Dots, so thank God the government’s finally done something about this. The Last Days Of Bush Jokes

A few savvy businesses are trying to make the most of President Bush’s last days in office. Boom Boom Beauty Bar in New York City is offering a “Say Goodbye to Bush” special, with 40 percent off bikini waxing until inauguration day, and at least two other NYC spas are offering similar inauguration-week bikini waxing deals. The waxing industry will indeed miss all of the puns they were able to make out of the president’s name these last eight years. [Gothamist] Keep reading »
