Oprah’s Network To Air Documentary “Becoming Chaz” About Cher’s Transgender Son

You might expect movies to go straight from the uber-crunchy Sundance Film Festival to, say, the uber-crunchy Independent Film Channel (IFC). But one Sundance documentary of serious cultural import will go a more mainstream route: Oprah’s new network, OWN, will air the television premiere of “Becoming Chaz,” about Chaz Bono‘s gender reassignment surgery. Chaz, the transgender son of Cher and Sonny Bono, was born “Chastity.” But he realized his true self was male and has gone through the long process to make the physical and emotional transformation. (Luckily he has the support of his femme girlfriend of four years, Jennifer Elia.) “Becoming Chaz” debuts at Sundance on January 23 and should air on OWN in May. I’m super-happy that OWN is using its mainstream appeal to give transgendered men and women visibility (than, say, the catchphrase “hot tranny mess”). I’m hoping Cher speaks up in the documentary, too, even if it’s just to tell other parents of transgender kids that she, too, sometimes forgets not to call her son “her”! Chaz Bono Brings His Girlfriend To The Premiere Of “Burlesque”

Cher still gets her pronouns confused when it comes to her female-to-male transgendered son, Chaz Bono. Regardless, Chaz made one of his first public appearances this week since having gender reassignment surgery, at the premiere of his mama’s new movie, “Burlesque.” With his girlfriend on his arm. Quotable: Chaz Bono Says Being A Lesbian Was A “Simple Answer”

“A lot of female-to-male transgender people end up doing a stint in the lesbian community because it just kind of makes sense,” he says. “At 13, 14, I was real clear at that point that I was attracted to women. So I was like, ‘I’m attracted to women, I am a woman, I guess I’m a lesbian.’ … Who you’re attracted to has nothing to do with gender identity. A lot of people find that really confusing, but they’re two completely different things. One is how you view yourself and how you feel, and the other one is who you’re attracted to.”

A 77-Year-Old Gets A Sex Change

In the wake of Chasity Bono’s big decision to have gender reassignment surgery, a transgender center in Maryland says they are busier than ever. One client on their roster is Renee Ramsay, formerly Richard—a 77-year-old man becoming a woman. No Friskians, that was no typo: 77. But doctors say that although the sex-change surgery is a complex procedure, age is not typically an issue.

Renee’s story actually kind of tugs at my heartstrings. She used to be in the military, was married twice, and for a long time would cross-dress when off-duty because of the whole don’t-ask-don’t-tell thing. So why did Renee wait so dang long to get lady parts? Well … she never wanted to upset her wife, who passed away recently. And well … it ain’t cheap. Renee has been saving up for this moment almost her entire life. At 77, she’s finally happy and feels like herself. I guess it’s never too late to change … your gender. [CBS] Keep reading »
