Gay Marriage Is Legal In Minnesota

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton signed a bill today that legalizes gay marriage, making the state the 12th to do so. Cheering spectators filled the south lawn of the state Capitol for the outdoor ceremony, with rainbow and American flags fluttering in a sweltering breeze. Dayton’s signature came one day after the state Senate approved the measure. Read more on Newser…

  • In related I’m-moving-to-Canada news, North Carolina’s state Senate has advanced a bill that erroneously lists abortion as a cause of premature birth. Although the medical community vehemently disagrees, abortion opponents frequently claim that abortion causes breast cancer or makes it difficult for women to have children in the future. The NC bill includes abortion as a cause of “preterm birth” up there with drug use lack of prenatal care. [RH Reality Check]

"I was born that way."

This video has been around for a few years, but it’s making the rounds again and I think it’s always worth watching–and thinking about. The premise? An interviewer asks a number of straight people for their thoughts on the whole “Do gay people choose to be gay?” debate, and then follows up with a version of the question gay people get asked all the damn time: “When did you choose to be straight?” Reactions range from surprised to confused to genuinely thoughtful. A few people even change their answers entirely. Hit play to check it out. [YouTube via Upworthy]

Merveilleux! Great news out of the land of cheese and wine today — France has become the 14th country to legalize gay marriage! The decision — 331-225 was the final tally in the National Assembly — comes after months of heated debate and public protests. France’s justice minister, Christiane Taubira, said the first weddings could be as soon as June. Last week, New Zealand also legalized same-sex marriage, though it was less controversial there. Now, if only the United States would get with it… [AP]

Watch the joyous moment!

Today New Zealand became the 14th country (counting France, which will make it official with a final vote next week) to legalize same-sex marriage, and they rang in equality in grand style. Once the vote was announced, the gallery cheered, and then a voice from the balcony started singing the traditional love song, “Pokarekare Ana,” which includes the following lyrics (translated):

“I have written you a letter, and enclosed with it my ring. If your people should see it, then the trouble will begin… My poor pen is broken, my paper is spent, But my love for you endures, and remains forever more.”

Judge Won’t Grant ‘Pregnant Man’ Thomas Beatie A Divorce

Welcome to the world’s most confusing divorce case. A judge in Arizona today declined to grant a divorce to Thomas Beatie, who attained minor celebrity status as the “pregnant man” a few years back and gave birth to three children. Beatie, who was born a woman but identifies as a man, married wife Nancy in Hawaii in 2003. But was he a man or a woman at the time? Beatie had undergone a double-mastectomy by then and was starting hormone therapy, but he still had a woman’s reproductive organs, reports AP. The judge today decreed that there wasn’t enough evidence proving Beatie was a man at the time of the wedding. That makes it a same-sex marriage, which means that the state of Arizona doesn’t recognize it. And if the state doesn’t recognize the marriage, it can’t grant a divorce, either. Read more…

This has been a big week. The Supreme Court has been hearing arguments in two key gay marriage cases — the Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8 — and their eventual judgments will essentially reveal how the highest court in the land views the constitutionality of a ban on gay marriage. Supporters of marriage equality have been showing their support in a variety of ways, including changing their Facebook profile photos to some iteration of the equals sign in solidarity. Opponents of gay marriage have also been using Facebook to express their  wildly cringeworthy, ignorant and discriminatory views. As this Sunday is the premiere of season three of “Game of Thrones,” here are 17 “GoT” GIFs reacting to some of the most inane (and public) anti-gay marriage status Facebook updates. Because marriage equality is coming and Westeros does not suffer fools. Keep reading »
