How do you pay tribute to the first gay community uprising in America? Well, it seems like Roy G. Biv has got it covered. Saturday, in New York City, an amazing double rainbow stretched across the sky. It seems a fitting homage to a city not only about to celebrate another spectacular Gay Pride Parade, but also the 40th Anniversary of The Stonewall Riots, an incredibly brave civil rights protest by the LGBT community. Angelina Jolie and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are making a joint appearance on Anderson Cooper 360 tomorrow night. The two women are apparently in cahoots on some undoubtedly serious subject. In an age where celebrities waltz into the UN more often than they walk the red carpet, and politicians twitter more than Ashton Kutcher, it’s hardly surprising to see the blurring of the lines between entertainment and politics. Still, Angelina and Hillary? It’s kind of an unlikely match. Something big must be happening (Hillary’s website says something about human rights?), so here are my four best guesses as to what they are really collaborating on. Keep reading »
Same-sex marriage bans just got stupider: two New Yorkers just got their marriage license revoked after city officials say they were snookered into believing the bride was actually a groom.
The would-be bride, Hakim Nelson, 18, identifies as a woman and hopes to undergo gender reassignment surgery. When Nelson married 21-year-old Jason Stenson on May 26, she not only wore an orange dress, white leggings and a $10 wedding ring, but also carried a state ID card that said “female” on it. (The official who issued the state ID assumed Nelson was a female.) Keep reading »
Televangelist Pat Robertson has said some pretty ridonkulous things. But recently, he topped even himself when, during a conversation about a bill protecting gay folks from hate crimes, he said it’s a slippery slope towards protecting “someone who likes to have sex with ducks.” When they heard this quote, Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci, who make up the group Garfunkel and Oates, made this hilarious pro-gay marriage music video, appropriately titled “Sex with Ducks,” celebrating the hypothetical freedom to “quack that swan.” So “put your beak in mine” and watch. The California Supreme Court has ruled to uphold Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage. However, the court also decided that the some 18,000 same sex marriages that occurred between June and November, when Prop 8 passed, will stand. [LA Times] Keep reading »
When Carrie Prejean lost last month’s Miss USA pageant because (some think) she opposed gay marriage, after which she did an ad for the National Organization for Marriage, rather than attending to her Miss California “duties,” she made it pretty clear where her loyalty lies. It makes sense strategically — her anti-gay marriage stance ruined her appeal for many, but it did increase her popularity with a powerful few. Prejean hedged her bets by distancing herself from the Miss California Organization and lining up with those who had her back. She wasn’t going to be a pageant queen forever, after all.
She should have handed over her crown to someone who was interested in fulfilling those Miss California duties — whatever they are — since she had better things to do. But she didn’t and because of that — and Perez Hilton’s relentless campaign against her — Prejean stayed in the spotlight and the inevitable happened. Topless photos! Of a beauty queen! Who believes in God! The hypocrisy! Let the slut-shaming begin! Keep reading »
Oh, dear. Miss California Carrie Prejean, who made headlines for her answer to a question about gay marriage at last month’s Miss USA pageant, has more secrets spilling out of her closet. First, it was revealed that the Miss California Organization paid for Prejean to get breast implants prior to the Miss USA pageant. Now, a topless photos of the beauty queen have been leaked to The Dirty. Miss USA judge Perez Hilton claims his sources say more photos of Prejean in a state of undress are due to hit the internet. Normally, I’d be like, “Topless? Who cares?” Considering Prejean believes “gay marriage isn’t biblically correct,” I’m amped to holler: “Hypocrite!” Stripping your top off and shooting the camera that come hither look is not what Jesus would do. Prejean released a statement: “I am a Christian, and I am a model. Models pose for pictures, including lingerie and swimwear photos. Recently, photos that were taken of me as a teenager have been released surreptitiously to a tabloid website that openly mocks me for my Christian faith. I am not perfect, and I will never claim to be.”
One small problem? This puts Prejean at odds with her contract with the Miss California Organization, which prohibits its representatives for posing for photographs in a state of full or partial nudity. Keep reading »
