More than 20 years later, drag balls are still alive and well — and they’ve entranced a younger generation of queer youth. We’ve been hearing a lot about Dan Savage’s incredible “It Gets Better” campaign — and we’re sure you’ve seen tons of “It Gets Better” videos. But this clip from Fort Worth City Councilman Joel Burns is especially moving. In the 10-minute video, Burns eloquently talks about the private pain he felt growing up as a gay teen in Texas. Burns goes on to tell his audience that “even though there may be some political repercussions for telling my story, this story is not just for the adults who might choose or not choose to support me. This story is for the young people who may be holding that gun tonight, or the rope or the pill bottle.” Burns’ story, from one of the most unlikely places, is a prescient and moving gift to gay teens everywhere.
