Hillary Clinton
"I support marriage for lesbian and gay couples."

As if you needed another reason to love former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton!

Clinton just released a PSA for the Human Rights Campaign in which she comes out in full support of marriage equality for lesbians and gays:

“LGBT Americans are our colleagues, our teachers, our soldiers, our friends, our loved ones. And they are full and equal citizens and deserve the rights of citizenship. That includes marriage. That’s why I support marriage for lesbian and gay couples. I support it personally and as a matter of policy and law, embedded in a broader effort to advance equality and opportunity for LGBT Americans and all Americans.” Keep reading »

“Two years ago, my son Will, then a college freshman, told my wife, Jane, and me that he is gay. He said he’d known for some time, and that his sexual orientation wasn’t something he chose; it was simply a part of who he is. Jane and I were proud of him for his honesty and courage. We were surprised to learn he is gay but knew he was still the same person he’d always been. The only difference was that now we had a more complete picture of the son we love.”

This is a section of an editorial by Republican Senator Rob Portman that was published in The Columbus Dispatch on Friday, announcing that he has changed his hardline stance against gay marriage in light of the fact that this son, Will, is gay. “I’ve come to the conclusion that for me, personally, I think this is something that we should allow people to do, to get married, and to have the joy and stability of marriage that I’ve had for over 26 years. That I want all of my children to have, including our son, who is gay,” he told CNN in a follow-up interview. Keep reading »

“I am a heterosexual guy in a tough macho sport, which is exactly the reason I feel a duty to say I support gay marriage and gay rights. I have nothing to gain personally from supporting this issue, and that’s the point. Society as a whole is better when there is equality, and I want to live in a country where everyone has the same rights because we all benefit from that. What people overlook is that this isn’t a sex issue, it’s a love issue. There’s no justifiable reason for trying to get in the way of two people who love each other.”

–UFC fighter Rashad “Suga” Evans has added his name to a brief filed by NFL players Chris Kluwe and Brendon Ayanbadejo urging the Supreme Court to overturn a ban on same-sex marriage. He also issued this beautiful statement to Outsports to show his support for marriage equality and equal rights. Huge props to Evans for taking such a powerful stand, and here’s hoping more athletes follow his lead! [Outsports]

Tokyo Disney Hosts Its First Same-Sex Wedding

“My partner Hiroko and I just held a gay wedding at the Tokyo Disney Resort. Even Mickey and Minnie are here to celebrate with us!”

Koyuki Higashi shared the above photo and the happy news of her wedding ceremony at the Tokyo Disney Resort in a tweet that has amassed nearly 7,000 retweets and sparked an article in The New York Times. While Mickey and Minnie blessed the couple, unfortunately the government doesn’t agree: gay marriage is not currently legal in Japan. Still, a huge congrats to Koyuki and Hiroko, and let’s hope it’s not too long before marriage equality is a reality around the world. [Twitter via NYT]

Laura Bush Wants Out Of Pro-Gay Marriage PSA

laura bush

Former First Lady Laura Bush wants out of a pro-gay marriage PSA which shows clips of Republicans, including Dick Cheney and Colin Powell, voicing their support for marriage equality. But she’s shit out of luck because she made her opinions publicly known in a CNN interview, which the Respect For Marriage Coalition (part of the Human Rights Campaign and Freedom To Marry) used in their ad. “When couples are committed, they ought to have the same sort of rights that everyone has,” Bush said on CNN in 2010. Now the Bushes have asked the group not to use Laura’s words in the clip, to no avail. Regardless, shame on her for not standing true to her convictions. [Advocate] [Photo: Getty]

Anne Almasy brides Weddings Unveiled

Oh, hurray!  A story with a not-horrible ending!

Here goes: photographer Anne Almasy purchased a print advertisement for a magazine called Weddings Unveiled. It was the first-ever print ad that she had ever purchased and she was pretty excited. So it really sucked when, on Valentine’s Day, the editor of Weddings Unveiled called to say they didn’t “feel comfortable” publishing an ad depicting a same-sex couple (partially displayed above). The editor asked if Almasy had another photograph she would prefer to use; she didn’t. The editor then said it was good that they hadn’t run her credit card yet to charge her for the ad. The AP Is Weird About When Gay Couples Can Be Called “Husband” Or “Wife”

lesbian brides

The Associated Press has clarified their journalistic standards on reporting about same-sex couples and they have some weird rules about when to refer to a partner as a “husband or wife.” According to a memo from the AP’s standards editor, which was reprinted by Romenesko, they will only do it if the word “husband” or “wife” is from a quote. But if a gay couple is legally married, the AP still refers to them as “partners” or “couples” instead of “husbands” or “wives”. Keep reading »
