Maureen Walsh on marriage equality

State Representative Maureen Walsh was one of only two Washington state republicans to break rank and vote in favor of the marriage equality bill, which passed. When the governor signs the legislation into law, as she has stated her intention to do, it will legalize gay marriage in Washington. In this video, choking back tears, Maureen Walsh  explains why she voted for fairness: she has a gay daughter. Walsh describes the bond she had with her late husband and the experience of her daughter coming out of the closet a couple years ago: “She’s a fabulous human being, and she’s met a person that she loves very much, and someday, by God, I want to throw a wedding for that kid.” You know the old cliche, “Speak your mind, even if your voice shakes?” Here is a real life example of just how powerful that shaky voice can be. Washington state’s House of Representatives voted yesterday to legalize same-sex marriage, which will make Washington the seventh state in the country to allow lesbians and gays to marry their partners.  Gay marriage is already legal in New York, Washington, D.C., Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, Iowa, and New Hampshire. Both Starbucks and Microsoft, which are based out of Washington, supported the bill and Starbucks even sent a letter to their 150,000 employees asking them to support gay marriage. Governor Chris Gregoire has vowed to sign the legislation into law next week and it will go into effect 90 days later, which will be in June. More good news on the marriage equality front! Today, the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals found Proposition 8 to be unconstitutional. California voters passed the measure in 2008, explicitly defining marriage to be between one man and one woman. In the four-month period before the law took effect, an estimated 18,000 same-sex couples wed in California. Today the court ruled that “Proposition 8 served no purpose, and had no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California.” This is an important victory, and experts think the case will make its way to the U.S. Supreme Court within the next year. Between Washington state’s recent marriage equality bill and 116 U.S. mayors signing a Freedom To Marry pledge, it feels like the tide is finally turning in the fight for equal rights. It’s about time. Read the full text of the court’s decision here. [Los Angeles Times]

When I shared a picture of my tattoo on my Twitter page and said, “All LOVE is equal,” a lot of people mocked me — they said, “What happened to you? You used to be a Christian girl!” And I said, “Well, if you were a true Christian, you would have your facts straight. Christianity is about love.” … I believe every American should be allowed the same rights and civil liberties. Without legalized same-sex marriage, most of the time you cannot share the same health benefits, you are not considered next of kin and you are not granted the same securities as a heterosexual couple. How is this different than having someone sit in the back of the bus because of their skin color?

I’ve always liked Miley Cyrus (although The Frisky as a whole jokes about her dopier moments) but I’m ready to trade up that “like” to “love.” Miley’s got a short article in the March issue of Glamour on why she supports gay marriage. She’s even recruited Billy Ray Cyrus to the cause. “My dad, who is a real man’s man, lives on the farm and is as Southern and straight as they come,” she writes. “He loves my gay friends and even supports same-sex marriage. If my father can do it, anyone can.” Here, here! [Glamour]

It’s been a great week for gay rights in the Pacific Northwest, with the recent news that the Washington state legislature has enough votes to legalize gay marriage, and governor Chris Gregoire indicating she would sign the bill into law. And there’s more good news: major companies like Microsoft (which had previously held a “neutral” position on gay marriage) and Nike have signed a letter to the governor indicating their support for the marriage equality measures, and yesterday, Starbucks sent out a letter to their nearly 150,000 employees pledging their full support to marriage equality. Read the heartwarming Starbucks text in full after the jump. I’m off to have a celebratory caramel macchiato. [Buzzfeed] Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Politician Trying To Ban Gay Marriage Caught Committing Adultery

  • Anti-gay Minnesota Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch has stepped down amongst allegations of an affair with a Senate staffer. Hmm, this throws a wrench in plans she and other GOPers in the state had to ban gay marriage, doesn’t it? An “apology” issued by the state’s gay community for breaking up Amy Koch’s traditional marriage is absolutely priceless (emphasis mine): Keep reading »

Last night, Conan O’Brien, who has been in New York City all week taping his show, officiated the first same-sex marriage on late night television. In front of a studio audience at the Beacon Theater, he wed the show’s costume designer Scott Cronick and his partner David Gorshein; Bravo’s Andy Cohen walked Cronick down the aisle. “Conan” is usually filmed in California, where gay marriage is not legal, hence the decision to wed Cronick and Gorshein in New York, which legalized same-sex marriage under the Marriage Equality Act in July of this year. I didn’t expect to be teary — this is “Conan” after all — but damn if I didn’t need a tissue. [Team Coco]

Is there anything cuter than an old married couple who are still in love? Reverend Kathryn Cartledge and Elizabeth Eve have 30 years together, but cannot be legally married in their home state because of bigotry against gays. This ‘We Do’ campaign video of the North Carolinian lesbians applying for a marriage license and then holding a sit-in at the clerk’s office until they get arrested has me wiping the tears off my cheeks.
