So we all know that gay marriage was banned in Texas in 2005, but did you know that some unfortunate wording in the amendment might have accidentally banned all marriages? Democrat and attorney general candidate Barbara Ann Radnofsky is making a ruckus about the colossal mistake she believes lawmakers made in drafting the amendment. The first part is pretty clear stating: “Marriage in this state shall consist only of the union of one man and one woman.” But the phrase in question in Subsection B of the legislation states:

“This state or a political subdivision of this state may not create or recognize any legal status identical or similar to marriage.”

Uh-oh. Does that mean all marriages in the state of Texas are not legit? Now that would be interesting—bye, bye George W and Laura. Critics accuse Radnofsky of trying to stir up controversy about the banning of gay marriage. As if that’s a bad thing? They stand by the amendment and think the linguistic loophole is not likely to hold up in the event of any forthcoming lawsuits. But still … what would happen if all straight marriages in the Lone Star state were unrecognized? Might it create some empathy for the gay marriage cause? Why … it just might, dangit. [Gawker]

There’s one major issue that sets Meghan McCain apart from other Republicans—she’s in favor of legalizing gay marriage. I admire McCain for going against her party—and many in the Democratic Party as well—on this issue, but I loathe that she manages to make her pro-gay marriage stance all about her. Case in point: today’s completely non-sensical Daily Beast column, in which McCain somehow manages to argue that she, as a pro-gay marriage Republican, gets more s**t from her party than pro-sex tape/anti-gay marriage Carrie Prejean. “If you’re a Republican, is it better to be in favor of gay marriage or to make a sex tape? That is the question.” Ugh, really?

I am currently seeing this really great girl. She’s smart, sweet and really fun to be around. We agree on a lot of things. We both hate the death penalty, love pizza and enjoy hanging out—sometimes illegally—on rooftops overlooking New York City. There is one thing, however, that we just can’t see eye-to-eye on. It’s not, as you would think, what to do on Saturday or where to have dinner or which baseball team is the best. Surprisingly, the issue that we butt heads on the hardest is gay marriage.

Boo! Maine, you FAIL. In yesterday’s election, Maine voters repealed a gay marriage law which would have made it the sixth state in America where gays have the right to marry just like straight couples. Instead, Maine has the dubious distinction of being the 31st state to make gay marriage verboten. It’s a total bummer that this kind of bigotry came from the people up; the gay marriage law had actually passed through the state legislature and was signed by the governor six months ago. The trouble was that gay rights opposition groups were hot on the politicians’ tails and immediately mobilized voters to repeal the law. Sorry, my dears, but at least you can still get married in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire and Iowa, right? [ABC News]

Following Meghan McCain‘s tweets has always been a strange endeavor. Under the Twitter handle mccainbloggette, Sen. John McCain’s 24-year-old daughter is as likely to tweet “God bless the troops!” as she is “Off to Perez Hilton’s party!” She doesn’t tackle many tricky political issues, but follow her Twitter feed and read her columns for The Daily Beast and it’s clear there is one social issue dear to her heart: gay rights. The girl’s a Grade-A fag hag—there’s no question about it. Just read how aflutter she got this weekend, tweeting while thousands of people marched in Washington, D.C. for marriage equality.

Yesterday was the Marriage Equality March in Washington, D.C. as gay rights activists came out in droves to demand the right to get legally married in the United States. In other gay rights news, at a human rights dinner this weekend, President Obama vowed to end “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the 16-year-old policy which bans gays from serving in the military if they are openly gay. About. Effing. Time. [Wall Street Journal]

Not that you ever send snail mail any more, but Miss Manners received an interesting question from a reader yesterday: How should she address letters to same-sex married couples? I guess Mrs. and Mrs. Jones looks a little like a typo? “Thank you for not contributing to the general rude-ing down (the equivalent of dumbing down) of society by chucking honorifics altogether,” Miss Manners replied. She warned against addressing the letter simply to the intended’s name. “When Miss Manners sees a letter baldly addressed ‘Martha Dribbleport,’ she always thinks it must be a summons,” she explained. Nope, turns out there’s a format as old-fashioned as the post office for addressing more than one married person of the same sex: “Mesdames” for women and “Messrs.” for men. Those words look kind of bizarre to me, but what do I know? I’m too busy rude-ing and dumbing down society. [South Coast Today]

Ben & Jerry’s is showing their support for marriage equality by changing their iconic ice cream flavor “Chubby Hubby” to “Hubby Hubby” as of today. Sept. 1 is the first day gay couples can marry in the state of Vermont, where Ben & Jerry’s is based. The brand is celebrating the occasion by partnering with Freedom to Marry “to raise awareness about why marriage equality matters and encourage nationwide support for the freedom to marry.” Cool huh? Brad Pitt stopped by the set of “Real Time” Friday night and chatted with Bill Maher about his pro-gay marriage, pro-pot, and anti-religion stance. “What is it you don’t like about religion?” Maher asked.

“You know, I grew up in a religious family, in a religious community and it just doesn’t make sense to me. It just doesn’t work for me in the long run,” Pitt said. “I never wanted to step on anyone else’s religion and their beliefs—that’s what’s great about our country—until I started seeing it defining policy. ... Like gay marriage, you have a group of people telling other people how to live their lives, and you can’t do that.”

“I have love in my life, a soul mate—absolutely. When someone asked me why Angie and I don’t get married, I replied, ‘Maybe we’ll get married when it’s legal for everyone else.’ I stand by that, although I took a lot of flak for saying it—hate mail from religious groups. I believe everyone should have the same rights. They say gay marriage ruins families and hurts kids. Well, I’ve had the privilege of seeing my gay friends being parents and watching their kids grow up in a loving environment.”

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the civil rights group founded by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is trying to fire Reverend Eric Lee, the president of its Los Angeles Chapter, because he supports gay marriage and dissed Prop 8. While it’s pretty ironic that the SCLC would give him a pink slip over gay rights, that’s sadly, not the only thing funny about a leading civil rights group turning their back on a marginalized community. Reverend Lee was a key figure in the marches and rallies against the California bill. But sadly, 70 percent of black voters did not share his sentiments at the polls. While the SCLC refuses to comment on the matter, perhaps, as the WOW Report pointed out, this quote from a 2003 speech by MLK’s widow, Coretta Scott King, can come to his defense now.

“I still hear people say that I should not be talking about the rights of lesbian and gay people. ... But I hasten to remind them that Martin Luther King Jr. said, ‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.’ I appeal to everyone who believes in Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream, to make room at the table of brotherhood and sisterhood for lesbian and gay people.”

The fight to legalize same-sex marriage just got more um, fashionable? Marc Jacobs has added his two cents to the debate with these limited-edition, illustrated tees. One features a couple and their child, all in matching LBDs, while the other features an image of the U.S. flag and dollar signs. Both boldly say, “I Pay My Taxes. I Want My Rights.” The shirts are only $24 a pop, but if you want one and don’t live in the New York City area, you’re sorta out of luck. They’re only sold at the Marc by Marc Jacobs accessories store in downtown Manhattan and only 200 of each style have been produced for purchase. Still, there’s always Ebay. [The Cut]

If gays can’t marry, no one will. That’s the point of view of some clergy in the Refuse To Sign movement, who believe that gay marriage should be legal everywhere, but individual churches should be allowed to choose whether or not to perform the unions.

While some clergy won’t perform any weddings or sign marriage certificates to straight couples, other clergy members will still announce, “I now pronounce you husband and wife” but will request the straight couples have a judge sign their marriage certificates instead.

How do you pay tribute to the first gay community uprising in America? Well, it seems like Roy G. Biv has got it covered.  Saturday, in New York City, an amazing double rainbow stretched across the sky. It seems a fitting homage to a city not only about to celebrate another spectacular Gay Pride Parade, but also the 40th Anniversary of The Stonewall Riots, an incredibly brave civil rights protest by the LGBT community.

Angelina Jolie and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are making a joint appearance on Anderson Cooper 360 tomorrow night. The two women are apparently in cahoots on some undoubtedly serious subject. In an age where celebrities waltz into the UN more often than they walk the red carpet, and politicians twitter more than Ashton Kutcher, it’s hardly surprising to see the blurring of the lines between entertainment and politics. Still, Angelina and Hillary? It’s kind of an unlikely match. Something big must be happening (Hillary’s website says something about human rights?), so here are my four best guesses as to what they are really collaborating on.

Same-sex marriage bans just got stupider: two New Yorkers just got their marriage license revoked after city officials say they were snookered into believing the bride was actually a groom.

The would-be bride, Hakim Nelson, 18, identifies as a woman and hopes to undergo gender reassignment surgery. When Nelson married 21-year-old Jason Stenson on May 26, she not only wore an orange dress, white leggings and a $10 wedding ring, but also carried a state ID card that said “female” on it. (The official who issued the state ID assumed Nelson was a female.)

Televangelist Pat Robertson has said some pretty ridonkulous things. But recently, he topped even himself when, during a conversation about a bill protecting gay folks from hate crimes, he said it’s a slippery slope towards protecting “someone who likes to have sex with ducks.” When they heard this quote, Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci, who make up the group Garfunkel and Oates, made this hilarious pro-gay marriage music video, appropriately titled “Sex with Ducks,” celebrating the hypothetical freedom to “quack that swan.” So “put your beak in mine” and watch.
