Girly Games, Games For Girls, And Girls Who Game: A Conversation With Femicom’s Rachel Weil

When I stumbled across a site called FEMICOM — “the feminine computer museum” — I knew I’d found something unique. At first glance, all I saw was a collection of twentieth century “games for girls,” an area that is virtually never talked about. It is also, admittedly, a subset of gaming that has always driven me right up the wall. Fashion and cooking games festooned in pink have never been part of my repertoire, and my cursory opinion of them was one of persistent stereotypes and lackluster design. But instead of passing the site by, my eyes lingered over that tagline: The feminine computer museum. “All right, FEMICOM,” I thought, clicking through the links. “Just how are you defining ‘feminine’? Feminine according to who?” Read more …

Gamers get a bad rep: They’re typecast as plump, basement-dwelling man-children who lead reclusive lives and collect actions figures. Apparently, that’s way off base. A study by GameHouse says that 55 percent of online gamers are actually female. Not only that, but in comparison to female non-gamers, they are happier, more social, and get it on more often! Say what?! Is Farmville really the solution to all of life’s problems? Keep reading »

Diapers And Video Games: The Grossest Thing You Will Read Today

Amazon’s “frequently bought together” feature is supposed to be a helpful search aid, and normally it is … except in the cases where it pulls up really embarrassing pairings. Like, for example, this adult diaper, which is also frequently bought with the video game “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.” You can put two and two together there.

Maybe this is a mix-up or maybe the association has nothing to do with the super gross reason in our heads why gamers would be buying adult diapers (reusable, no less!). Still … after hearing the occasional horror story of people so obsessed with “World of Warcraft” that they would favor peeing in jars over bathroom breaks (yes), it’s easy enough to assume that some obsessional gamers use their Amazon shopping time to stock up on “be prepared” items. Video Games: Chick Flicks Get Played

The triumvirate of teen queen movies: Pretty In Pink, Mean Girls, and Clueless — are all getting remade into Broadway musicals. Sike! Although we’re sure some of the score will be watered down into electronic bleeps, they’re actually turning the dramas into full on games. Paramount Pictures, who owns all the movies, is creating digital downloads and low-cost “casual” ones for consoles like Wii, Playstation, and eventually Nintendo DS. Finally girl gamers will have some video games all to ourselves, without our boyfriends trying to swoop in and beat our high score! Read on for more details… Keep reading »
