This year, as in every year, there was an absence of plus-sized women at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, which gave the organizers of Full-Figured Fashion two options: either lie down and take it, or fight back. They decided to fight back, and organized their own incredible Full-Figured Fashion Week, featuring a slew of fashion shows, runway competitions and sales tailored to the plus-size consumer. Vice’s report on the event, hosted quizically by waif-thin Charlet Duboc, chronicles the week’s events — and the rather unkind feelings non-plus-size women have toward toward their full-figured counterparts.

A Brazilian Model Takes Top Honors — And, No, We’re Not Talking About Gisele

Chances are you’ve never heard of Fluvia Lacerda, but all that’s about to change. Fluvia was just named the Best Plus Commercial Print Model of the Year by Full Figure Fashion Week. She’ll officially receive the award this weekend at Full Figured Fashion Week, for her work with brands like Torrid, Monif C., Igigi and Fashion Bug and has been featured in the pages of Glamour, Bust and Playboy Brazil.

“The fact that I won this award is a major deal and I’m very passionate about my work, mostly because I feel that I represent the body image of many women,” said Lacerda. “I’m not only a healthy woman, but one who wears a size 18 and am confident about it.”

Get ready, girls: Full-Figured Fashion Week is just about upon us. According to the event’s mission, Full-Figured Fashion Week “will not only provide an opportunity for independent designers to market their collections to a wider audience, and a unique opportunity for plus models to gain more professional exposure on the runway, but also a chance for the media, buyers and the general public to have access to collections that have not received the marketing and publicity they deserve.” “It’s been crazy,” said organizer Gwen Devoe. “It’s just exploding. Plus-Size Women Get Their Own Fashion Week, But Is That Enough?

Most fashion shows are known for emaciated, twig-like models strutting down runways, but there’s a different kind of fashion week going on right now. Full-Figured Fashion Week took five years to organize, but, at last, arrived in New York yesterday. Until Saturday night, designers will show buyers and the press their clothes for plus-size women, as well as take part in panels such as “The State of the Curvy Community.”

“The main objective is to show the consumers and buyers that there are other designers out there,” organizer Gwen DeVoe told The Daily Beast. She also said plus-size women care about looking good, rather than having tunics and jersey dresses as their only options. Keep reading »
