Frisky By The Numbers: Women Are Wasting A Lot Of Time Obsessing About Weight

According to a new survey, the average woman still spends an obscene amount of time obsessing about calories and worrying about her weight. Over the course of a 67-year lifespan, we lose about one entire year of our life to thoughts of whether or not you should have that side of french fries and what they might do to your ass. And imagine if you live to be 100. If you still can eat solid foods/care about how your body looks, the lost time would be staggering. These stats are completely unsurprising, but when you really think about it, is worrying about dieting really worth losing an entire year (or more) of your life over?  I say NO. Think about all the other things you could be doing with that time: like filibustering or volunteering at an animal shelter or writing a novel. The takeaway of the survey says, “Counting calories is a part of modern day life.”  I don’t think we have to accept that. [Daily Mail UK]

domestic violence against women

A cold, hard statistic to swallow: one in three women around the world age 15 and older has suffered abuse at the hands of a partner, according to a new study. The journal Science collated 141 studies from 81 countries around the world and found that 30 percent of women have experienced a physical or sexual attack from an intimate partner. Of course, we so often don’t see the how widespread violence against women can be because victims are fearful and ashamed to come forward. If you or someone you know needs support for dealing with intimate partner violence, you can contact RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) or the National Domestic Violence Hotline.  [NBC News]

Frisky By The Numbers: The Toddler/Terrorist Death Toll

Frisky by the numbers toddlers vs terrorists

The website Opposing Viewpoints revealed a rather sobering statistic this week: The number of people killed in the first five months of the year from gun deaths involving toddlers was nearly three times as many as from deaths involving terrorist attacks. Since January, there have been 11 deaths related to toddlers who somehow gained access to guns. In many of those cases, the toddlers themselves, or another young child, were victims. One child, though, fatally shot his father, a former Green Beret soldier. (And that doesn’t even cover the nine other deaths reported by kids 7 to 19 who were also accidentally killed while handling firearms.) Keep reading »

On Christmas Eve 2009, an escort named Lenora Ivie Frago refused to have sex with a client who hired her via Craigslist, so he pulled out a gun and shot her. Ezekiel Gilbert of Texas injured Frago in the neck, paralyzing her for seven months until she died.

Yesterday, a jury acquitted Gilbert of murder, because he said he was only trying to get back the $150 he had paid her. He didn’t intend to kill the 23-year-old escort when he shot her in the neck, you see. He was just trying to reclaim his stolen property! Keep reading »
