Hump Day Hottie: Michael B. Jordan

The cold winter months have arrived, which means it’s time to heat things up. Our new newsletter, Hump Day Hotties, will bring our favorite eye candy directly into your inbox every Wednesday. (Subscribe here!) Feel free to drool. We won’t judge.

One of the breakout stars of this year’s Sundance Film Festival is an actor who’s been on my radar for awhile. His name is Michael B. Jordan, and if you’re a fan of “The Wire” and “Friday Night Lights” — two of the best television shows of all time hands down no debate – you know who I’m talking about. Michael’s portrayal of teenage drug dealer Wallace on “The Wire” tore my motherfuckin’ heart out. And a few years — and muscles — later, he did it again as East Dillon Lions quarterback Vince Howard. He steamed up the small screen and is poised to do the same on the big screen in the indie flick “Fruitvale,” playing Oscar Grant, a young man who was shot to death by a police officer at the Oakland, CaliforniaFruitvale rapid transit station. The Hollywood Reporter praised Michael’s performance, saying, “Jordan at moments gives off vibes of a very young Denzel Washington in the way he combines gentleness and toughness.” Young Denzel indeed. Keeping clicking to check out a bunch more photos of this incredibly handsome and talented actor…

“Dillon is a classic American town filled with hard-working, middle-class Americans, who just want to lead productive, healthy lives. And the women we represented on the show — the women we are in real life — are like the millions of women across the nation. Women who want to make our own health care decisions. Women who want to earn equal pay for the work we do. Women who want affordable health care. In fact, it is President Obama who has shown his values to be more closely aligned with those represented by the phrase.  … So as women, let’s take ‘Clear Eyes, Full Hearts’ back and use it as it was always intended — as a motivator for progress, power, and greatness.”

– “Nashville” star Connie Britton and her former “Friday Night Lights” executive producer Sarah Aubrey penned an op-ed for USA Today taking Mitt Romney to task for co-opting the show’s slogan ”Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose” for his campaign. Tami Taylor is not happy, y’all! She explains how Obama’s positions on issues like fair pay, reproductive choice, and affordable health care would have helped various different characters on the show in real life.  [USA Today] [Photo: Splash News]

What We Missed: The Frisky Staffs Talks About Two Great Documentaries & Wonders How Tim Riggins Would Vote

Wait, Tim Riggins Would Vote?

On this week’s episode of “What We Missed,” I totally bite it! So clutzy. Also, Ami and Jessica were both super pumped about a new documentary they saw called “Girl Model,” which takes a disturbing look at how model scouts go to small Eastern European villages and scout girls as young as 12 and 13, sending them to places like Japan to work. I quite literally squealed with glee when I saw this photo of Tami Taylor–er, I mean Connie Britton–and Hayden Panettiere decked out in gorgeous gold dresses for their new country music drama, “Nashville,” which debuts October 10th. As someone who is obsessed with Connie Britton, sequins, country music, southern accents, sassy ladies, and melodrama, I will definitely be tuning in. Check out a preview of the show after the jump! “Friday Night Lights” Headed For The Big Screen!

Hallelujah! “Friday Night Lights,” which just ended its five season television run a few weeks ago, is coming to be the big screen, possibly as soon as 2013. Creator Peter Berg confirmed the rumor, saying that the movie would pick up when the show left off and would center around main characters, Coach Eric Taylor and his wife Tami. That would mean the divine Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton would be back for the film, but it’s still up in the air how many of the show’s more popular cast members/characters would join them. After all, in the series finale, the Taylors moved to Philadelphia, leaving Texas behind. I can only hope that somehow Berg and his fellow writers find a way to get a little Tim Riggins action in there. Assistant Coach? Taylor family pool boy? Whatever. In conclusion: clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose! [NY Daily News] Keep reading »

10 Things You Didn’t Know About “Friday Night Lights”

friday night lights

It’s hard for me to process the fact that, tonight at 9 p.m., one of my favorite television shows will be coming to an end. “Friday Night Lights” has been brilliant since minute one and, five seasons later, it has remained a joy to watch. The norm for a high school show is for it to move at a rapid clip, with oodles of plotlines being thrown out and resolved each episode. But, in part because of the show’s focus on the Taylor family, “Friday Night Lights” has always unfolded slowly, taking time to build both its plots and characters. A single plot could linger for an entire season. See: Julie’s affair with her married TA and the return of Vince’s convict dad.

After tonight’s finale, “FNL” will be going off the air, only to be seen only in syndication on ESPN. And it’s shocking to me how little fanfare this fact has gotten. I mean, I know it’s awkward since many people have seen already finale (it aired earlier this year on DirecTV and also, the season five DVD is already out) but still, people, this is it! I’m glad other bloggers are having as hard a time with this as I am. Over at The Awl, Sarah Blackwood says a teary goodbye to the show and at Survey Monkey, fans are rating everything from the show’s hottest characters to its best bromance. But my favorite piece I’ve seen so far is at Grantland, where Robert Mays has compiled an oral history of “FNL.” After the jump, 10 facts I learned from it. Keep reading »

Girl Talk: When I Grow Up, I Want To Be Tami Taylor

There’s a lot to love about “Friday Night Lights,” a TV show about so much more than just high school football. My interest in the show was initially sparked by the sight of Taylor Kitsch, sweaty and shirtless, but it struck an unexpected chord with me. I came for the hot guy— I stayed for the honest and realistic portrait of long-term monogamy and lessons on leadership and compromise. For those reasons, the character of Tami Taylor has resonated with me the most. I often find myself asking, What would Tami Taylor do? Here’s why. Keep reading »

It’s Tami Taylor, Y’all

I’ve been in denial about the end of “Friday Night Lights.” With Connie Britton’s Emmy nom and this video compilation all of Tami Taylor’s y’alls, I suppose I can begin the grieving process. I won’t forget you Tami. You are an amazing wife and mother and all-around human being whose graciousness I shall only dream of attaining. Plus, her hair always looks so good. Culturista: Your Guide To The Week, From “Horrible Bosses” To The End Of “Friday Night Lights”

I don’t know about you, but I sure am feeling refreshed after having July 4th off. Still, even though it’s a short week, so much is happening in the pop culture universe. Some of the most exciting happenings of this week: the series finale of “Friday Night Lights,” which makes me sad because I honestly could have watched this show for another five years; the release of “Horrible Bosses,” which, in addition to “Bridesmaids,” could make this one of the funniest summers on record; and the sequel to Push landing on bookstore shelves, which lets us know what happens to Precious about 10 years later.

After the jump, this week’s television, movies, and music plus much, much more. Keep reading »

5 Reasons I’m Psyched Kyle Chandler Is On This Magazine Cover

Ahhhhh, what a wonderful magazine cover. When I walked to the newsstand today and saw Kyle Chandler’s face staring at me with his gruff, signature, “don’t you know how to throw a football” look, I felt instantly compelled to buy the June issue of Men’s Journal even though, well, I’m not the target audience. Kyle, who stars in “Friday Night Lights” isn’t the type of actor you see on magazine covers often, so I’m pumped that Men’s Journal decided to go with him. After the jump, five reasons this makes me happy. Keep reading »
