20 Years Ago Today, Freddie Mercury Passed Away

Not only is it Thanksgiving — Happy Turkey & Sides Day, everyone! — it’s also the 20th anniversary of Freddie Mercury’s death. Mercury, the lead singer of, oh, the greatest band ever in my humble opinion, passed away from bronchial pneumonia resulting from AIDS in 1991. He died just one day after he revealed to the world that he had the disease. RIP, Freddie — your legacy lives on in the music you gave to the world! Wasilla High School Bans Song By Gay Rock Legend

An Alaska high school choir was up in arms after the principal banned a song for graduation because it was written by a gay rocker. Wasilla principal Dwight Probasco banned the 1975 Queen hit “Bohemian Rhapsody” from a graduation ceremony after complaints from parents about the sexual orientation of songwriter and lead singer of Queen, Freddie Mercury. “The whole thing was just ridiculous,” said a senior from Sarah Palin’s hometown. “They’d played the song on the school intercom and we played it at prom.
