A commercial for Yves Saint Laurent’s Belle D’Opium fragrance has been banned in the U.K. because the ad supposedly shows models “simulating drug use.” The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) “therefore concluded it was irresponsible and unacceptable for broadcast.” In the ad (above), the character of “Belle” runs her finger down her arm and the ASA concluded that action “could be seen to simulate the injection of opiates into the body.” The ASA also felt that Belle’s movements later in the ad, including one in which “her body [seizes] upwards while lying on the floor,” could be viewed as “simulating the effect of drugs on the body.” Personally, I just think she’s dancing like nobody’s watching. Kind of hilariously, the Daily Mail U.K.
notes that the ad has already been viewed by 44 million people and that a whopping 96 percent of French women (specifically!) didn’t think there was anything inappropriate about the commercial. So what do you think? Do you side with the crusty old ASA or those hip French ladies? [Huffington Post

There’s going to come a point in this sabbatical of mine where I am really going to miss having sex. And when that time comes, how to fight the urge? Perhaps by titillating the senses that are stimulated by having sex, I can give myself a little “taste,” so to speak, without participating in the act itself. Lady Gaga’s upcoming fragrance should help. According to Fashionista, Gaga wants her first perfume to smell like semen and blood, the combination of which, in my mind at least, will result in Eau de Period Sex. What is up with this seemingly very photoshopped photo of Dree Hemingway lounging on a bed in an ad for Salvatore Ferragamo’s Attimo fragrance? That’s not a rhetorical question, as in, now I’m going to tell you exactly what’s been done, in my estimation, to this image. But it is decidedly strange and malformed looking, no? I think it’s got something to do at least in part with the fact that her head has been resized to ginormous proportions. It’s as big as her bottom, it seems. And perhaps her calves are way too long compared to her thighs. You’d think with whatever monster budget they had for this shoot that they could make the young Hemingway look like something other than a side show freak.

Katy Perry dons a purple and pink spotted latex catsuit complete with tail, black platform stilettos, and a cat mask for her first Purr fragrance ad, which was shot by Miles Aldridge. The iconic British punk band is getting its own themed fragrance thanks to a partnership with Fragrance and Beauty Limited. Guess the group who once promoted anarchism with their hit anthem “Anarchy in the U.K.” has made peace with the man by going corporate? Who knows. Anyhow, we’re not sure capturing the essence of punk rock would smell all that good (the last time we checked, it smelled like sweat and cigarettes), but the makers have translated this “revolution in a bottle” thusly: “Resisting tradition, fighting conformity and disregarding aromatic conventions it leaves a fresh, restless bite of lemon, sharpened and intensified by a defiant black pepper. Electrified by aldehydes, the fragrance exudes pure energy, pared down and pumped up by leather, shot through with heliotrope and brought back down to earth by a raunchy patchouli.” We’d like to say this is a joke, but it does seem you can actually purchase it.
