Nothing gets me up on my soapbox more than comments about rape, especially rape on college campuses. It seems that despite the plethora of statistics laid out plainly in nifty little infographics, the public remains woefully ignorant to the widespread prevalence of sexual assault and rape right here in the U.S. of A. Even scarier is that members of the media with a mass audience espouse this same ignorance.

Take Fox’s “The Five” host Bob Beckel. When discussing Colorado Democrat Joe Salazar’s comments about keeping guns off campus by saying that on-campus call boxes and rape whistles should suffice to protect against rape, Beckel asked, “When was the last time you heard about rape on campus?” Keep reading »

Whoops! Fox News Accidentally Illustrates Story On “Traditional Gender Roles” With Photo Of Same-Sex Couple

Fox News, what a bunch of bozos. Jessica Valenti, founding editor of Feministing, noticed something curious about the photo accompanying an article on FoxNews.com about “traditional gender roles.” Further research confirmed that the couple getting married in the photo (presumably who Fox News felt represented traditional gender roles in a marriage) was not that of a man and a woman, but two women. Lela McArthur and Stephanie Figarelle were married in Anchorage, Alaska, on February 14, 2012, and their photo — shot by the Associated Press — had previously been used in a Huffington Post story on romance around the world. Fox News removed the photo from their story as soon as they realized their “error.” [Jessica Valenti]

Head, Meet Desk: Fox Nation Illustrates Transgender Healthcare Story With Photo From “Mrs. Doubtfire”

In this unpredictable and ever-changing world we live in, at least we can always count on Fox News to provide a consistent stream of ignorance. The latest example comes from Fox Nation, a “news” website that chose to illustrate a story about transgender healthcare with a photo of Robin Williams from the movie “Mrs. Doubtfire.” Because, obviously, every serious trans issue can totally be summed up by a male comedian in a dress putting out a fire on his fake boobs. Sigh. After sparking outrage and petitions to remove it, the ridiculous movie shot has been replaced by a generic stock photo. And just in case anyone was misled by Fox’s story, Village Voice blogger Alan Scherstuhl explains, “For the record, the number of transgender Americans asking insurance to cover boobfires each year is minuscule.” [Village VoiceBasic Rights Oregon]

You thought you were so smart, America, didn’t you? Between the Republican presidential nominee who flip-flops on reproductive rights to various Republican politicians who declared pregnancy resulting from rape is God’s special blessing, you thought you had that “war on women” thing in the bag.

Well, you’re wrong and Fox News is here to tell you all about it. “War on women”? Poppycock. The real war raging in America is a war on men. This is according to Fox News columnist Suzanne Venker, the niece of 86-year-old anti-feminist Phyllis Schafly, who took her poison pen to Fox this weekend in an effort to blame “angry,” “defensive” women for the supposed lack of “marriageable” men.

After the jump, let’s delve a little deeper into the fracas that has me dashing off to the nearest sports bar after work to salve the wounds of these poor, beleageured men: Keep reading »

Today In UGH: Adam Carolla Joins Fox News

Adam Carolla

The former “Man Show” host Adam Carolla has been all too happy to be a professional douche. That time he said women are not as funny as men? The time he asked, “When did we start giving a shit about [transgender] people?” So … SURPRISE! … now Carolla has joined Fox News as a commentator. He’ll be chumming it up with Bill O’Reilly on “The O’Reilly Factor” and appear on other shows occasionally as well.

The last thing that network needs is another dude who tries to pass off bigotry as “humor.” I understand that Carolla has some opinions that might be considered “liberal,” but I sure as shit do not consider a homophobic sexist qualified to represent me or most other liberals I know. Another reason not to watch this trash (although, in fairness, the only time I watch any Fox News is when my nearly-70-year-old suburban Republican father puts it on when I go visit — so, enjoy Dad!). [NYMag.com] [Photo: Getty]

  • I am not Michelle Malkin fan, either, but the Fox News commentator who said the conservative wackjob is angry because she’s “probably needs to get laid” was inappropriate. • Labor rights activists are demanding the Phillippines consulate in New York City start an anti-trafficking task force to look into abusive working conditions held by Filipina maids who work here as housekeepers and in other low-wage jobs. The call comes after a Filipina woman came forward about working 20 hours a day in a Kuwaiti diplomat’s house in Manhattan who finally escaped after eight months of abusive labor. Ann Romney and Mitt Romney beach walk photo

“You’re just jealous!”

It’s not just a playground taunt for 5th grade girls anymore. It’s also Fox News contributer Liz Trotta’s eye-roll-inducing comment on why female reporters — just female reporters, mind you, because a male reporter has never once written anything about the Romney family’s wealth, ever — have it out for Ann Romney. All reporters are Democrats, duh, or as Trotta calls them, “Barack Obama’s political operatives.” And they have their “knives out” for Ann Romney because they are “driven by envy … of a woman who managed to do exactly what their mothers told them, although they would never admit it: marry a good, preferably rich man; raise your children full time and dress like a lady.” Keep reading »

When Fox News And CNN Got It Wrong

Remember this morning, when the Supreme Court upheld Obama’s health care law? That was awesome. But in the moments after the ruling came down, there was mass confusion about what it all meant. After all, Supreme Court rulings aren’t just like, YAY or NAY. They’re hundreds of complexly worded legal documents. So because both CNN and Fox News were concentrating so hard on being first with news of the ruling, instead of right, they both went to air with the wrong information. It’s a very “Dewey Defeats Truman” kind of moment, isn’t it? And it proves that reading really is fundamental.

Friday morning, Geraldo Rivera was on “Fox News and Friends” to discuss the Trayvon Martin shooting case. Watch Video

This clip is all kinds of ew. Via the Women’s Media Center on February 20th, the Fox 5 San Diego sports reporter Ross Shimabuku called race car driver Danica Patrick a “bitch” in a spot that was apparently about how “sexy” she is — and how ungrateful she is when reporters ask her about it. Ahh, a one-two obnoxiousness punch! Keep reading »
