If Foursquare Was For Sex

Last summer, when I was just starting to dabble with Foursquare, the social networking app that let’s you “check in” to various locations, achieving badges and Mayorships and other ridiculous intangible rewards, I came up with a genius idea. (Or I thought it was anyway.) I added a new location, knowing it didn’t already exist in Foursquare’s expansive list of places. “Ryan Gosling’s Pants,” I typed, laughing at my own hilariousness. And then I checked in. Two check-ins later, I was officially the Mayor of Ryan Gosling’s Pants. It felt so good, I almost craved a post-coital cigarette. Maybe that’s why this College Humor-produced video about an app called F**ksquare appeals to me. (NSFW due to some salty language and implied sexual activity.) [College Humor] Keep reading »

Dealbreaker: The Obnoxious Social Media Oversharer

Newly returned to New York after a two-year sojourn abroad, I was eager to make friends (or more than friends), so I turned to my Facebook, FourSquare, Twitter, Tumblr, and OkCupid accounts. At some point, social media savvy became a legitimate dating skill and I was ready to showcase mine to the fullest. Discounts At Gap, Steve Madden—Is Foursquare On The Verge Of A Consumer Breakthrough?

Some of us here at The Frisky have yet to get on board with Foursquare, the mobile “check-in” app that lets others see where you are. If you’re not into using the service to virtually navigate your social life, the company may still appeal to you yet: Foursquare recently announced a discount deal with the Gap. Users who check into Gap locations through August 22 will get 25 percent off their purchase. (If you’ve tried these mobile discount things by waving your iPhone in a clerk’s face and seen their “huh?” reaction, not to worry—the check-in gives you a discount code just in case.) Another place you might shop that’s now offering a Foursquare discount? Certain Steve Madden stores are offering 20 percent off purchases of $50 or more from now through September 30. Keep reading »

Frisky Rant: I Hate Foursquare

I remember the first time I saw a Foursquare update pop up on my Facebook homepage. “Dick* has just checked into the Seaside Inn.” My heart dropped into my stomach. I DID NOT want to know that my ex-boyfriend Dick had just checked into a hotel with his new girlfriend. Screw you, Dick, for being a dick. And screw you, Foursquare, for adding yet another layer of complication to my electronic life. Keep reading »
